    Riders celebrate Grey Cup

So living in Regina I hear about the Riders alot. Well for the last 2 weeks all I have heard about it is the upcoming ceremonies to reflect on the 40th anniversary of the first Grey Cup. Sure George Reed and Ron Lancaster were great and all and the Riders had great teams in the 60's but whoopeee!!!! There is nothing worth celebrating here in gopherland.

It's almost been 40 years since they won even their last Grey Cup. Yes, I know all teams do this to celebrate when they won their first cup but it's weird around here. The Eskimos have won 2 Grey Cups in 3 years and the Riders have won 2 in 40 and they are whooping it up here.

I'm not usually one for starting threads like this but I just needed to rant a little. I'm sure Griswold will enjoy this thread.

I will not, for a moment longer, support an organization who chooses to cowardly kneel where they once fiercely & proudly stood

heck our QB who's only played in the league for 3 years has won 2 of em'

Before you insult a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you insult him, you'll be a mile away, and have his shoes.

Yeah, it's been a dry spell (to say the least) but why shouldn't we celebrate our First Grey Cup vistory? It was a big moment for the franchise. It's a big moment in every franchise.

Whether your team has won 2 or 12, the first one is always special. I suppose the Esks did nothing in 2004 to commemorate the '54 Esks?

To be honest, I haven't noticed much celebrating going on around here lately, so I really don't have much to rant on!!!

However it is worth saying that it will be the only Grey Cup they will be celebrating in a next few years, and I mean hey, if you can't win any new ones, you may as well celebrate some old ones!!!

However, the mods around here have been a little tight lately. I couldn't tell you how many bashes / crazy stuff I have read on this board, and the other day a post I made about Brady and Pronger (totally in fun of course, as it was stupid) got edited. I was shocked, after seeing some of the stuff on this board.

Interesting that it was the Riders who moaned and bitched for a salary cap, and since a cap was put in place for them, they only years they've won they broke the salary cap rules.

Actually- The three-in-a-row gang got together that year for a reunion.. I always loved to sit and listen to Jack Parker, Frankie Morris and the rest tell their stories.. That week was a lot of fun..

Frank told a story about how the guys would get together after practice out in front of the Old International Hotel and bet beers over who would be the first throw a football through a third story window of the hotel from the sidewalk on the other side of the street.. What group of guys that was... BTW Jackie and Johnny Bright usually ended up going toe to toe in the window bet with everyone else having to pony up money to pay for their drinks..

Everytime Frank would come out to practice back when I was still playing I'd gently prod him into telling me a story or two from back in his playing days either from here or from when he was in Toronto.. It usually didn't take me much to get him going.. Boy am I ever glad I did.. I learned a lot from him.. He truly played for the love of the game..

I also love to listen to Jackie tell his stories in that slow Tennessee drawl of his.. He is from the same neck of the woods down south that my late grandfather was from.. Hearing his voice always makes me think of my grandfather and it makes me a little misty sometimes.. Jackie is a real character..

My dad always told me back when I was growing up that in his opinion the 1966 Rider team was probably the best CFL team he ever faced back when he was with those great Ottawa teams of the 60's..... His Ottawa team lost to the Riders in that 66 Grey Cup..

If any of you out in Regina get a chance to sit with any of those guys from the 66 team-- take it.. Their locker room stories alone would be enough for me to want to take it all in..

I never said it was stupid to get together and celebrate the first Grey Cup a team has won. It's just that Rider fans are always celebrating old memories like they are gods football team. Wouldn't it be nice for the new generation of Rider faithful to be able to sit down with there kids and grad kids and talk about memories of the 2000's instead of the 60's? I know as an Eskimo fan I will have that luxury of telling my kids how I was at the 2003 Grey Cup game and I watched Ricky Ray connect with Tucker on a beautiful TD pass...

I've been fortunate enough a few years ago to watch a couple of TC sessions while speaking to Frank Morris. A fine gentlemen indeed.

Evil comments building inside, must resist temptation.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

Not to mention the finest evaluator of Canadian talent this league has ever seen. (In my opinion) He's as responsible for the 5 in a row glory years as anyone.

I got nothin' against celebrating the past.......so long as you don't have a problem with us pokin' a little fun at the futility in between.....

Meh.. power to 'em I say.. that '66 team was a powerhouse for sure.. sure beat the crap outta many teams in that era (tho we beat 'em twice in '66 and they only beat us once that year )

Besides, that team produced one of the best football executives of all time in Gluey Huey Campbell..
