    Assessment: Linebackers

Due to a variety or circumstances this was a real weakness for the Esks this past year. Losing Steven Marsh (perhaps our best defensive player period) and then AJ Gass for the 1st half of the season really hurt the Eskimos. Mobley had another strong season though I was rather irritated when he was taken out on 2nd downs at times.

J.P. Abraham - Was a pleasant suprise at camp beating out two other NI LB's drafted higher than him. Was in an out of the lineup last season. I see him back next year but strictly as a special teams guy. I don't think he can be a starter at LB in todays CFL.

Micheal Botterill - Picked up from Montreal specifically for special teams, proceeded to play terrible on ST's in at least one game. I think he'll be back at camp but certainly no guarantees he will make the team.

Andre Sommersell - Really a DLineman but is listed on the Esks roster at LB. A big disappointment. Looked good in camp, was the reason we dumped Montford, had a good game or so but was innactive for a number of games in the 2nd half of the season. I haven't given up hope on him however and think he will be back at camp next year. He still might have a place on the DL.

Steven Marsh - If he makes it back from his injury it will be a great story but I doubt he can overcome the seriousness of the injury. Great player who might not play again due to injury.

Marcus Winn - One of the guys thrust into a starters spot with the Gass/Marsh situation. The Esks seem to like him but I'm hoping we can do better, LB was a real sore spot the 1st half of the season. He'll be back at camp but hopefully he is really pushed for a spot.

Quincy Stewart - Supposidely a good special teams guy but he is not a starting calibre LB in my mind. He'll be back at camp but I don't expect him to make the team next year.

A.J. Gass - Still has gas left in the tank and should be back next year. We need his attitude and tenacity at the LB spot. As usual they will bring in challengers but I see him as our starting MLB next season.

Anthony Floyd - Though listed as a Db on the Esks roster he got action at LB last game. A total unknown at this point in time. I assume he will be at camp to try for the Marsh position next season.

Singor Mobley - Another solid vet that I'd like to see back next year. He is still the best tackler on the team and is around the ball alot. There has been talk about him being replaced but it would be a mistake unless the Esks come up with a number of real hot shots.

The Esks simply must be better at LB next year. We need better canadian depth and at least one new starter. I expect Paul Jones to really beat the bushes looking for player for next camp. This position must be improved.

The guy always seems to be a step too slow... not sure that he really fits on the big field up here. I too hope that he is really pushed hard for his roster spot

As much as I hate to say it I think Mobes has lost a step or 2 but with the fooder we have at LB we have to keep him around for next year

BTW nice work on the assesments!!

but wouldnt you rather see another Bass flying around the field in Green and Gold? IMO he looks better than Lowry and doesnt BC still hold onto Lowry's rights?

Winn and Stewart are dead weight. They have shown they are both incapable to replace Gass or Mobes. With the cap in place, the days of having guys that do one thing well, are a thing of the past. Stewart and Winn have been around a couple of seasons and look to be no closer to taking the next step.
          Plus.
Considering how bad our special teams have been this year, its hard to find a reason to even keep them around for that. Gass and Mobes have some football left in them, Mobes being the older of the 2. We have to start looking for a replacement and IMO, Stewart and Winn are not going to be replacements for Mobes. They need to bring someone in that can back Mobes up and look to replace him in a season or 2 when its time to retire.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

Bass has more years left at U of A, IIRC (3 years left, compared to Lowry's none). And IMO Bass still needs some polishing - great tackler with a nose for the ball, but he tends to drift out of position a bit at times. Another year or two in CIS and he'll be a first-round pick, I think.
Lowry's pretty solid - and he does have the two pro camps behind him. IIRC he was the last cut in BC in one of those - with our current NI deficiencies at LB, I think he'd make at least the PR right now.

I'm not sure BC does hold on to his rights - I THINK he's a free agent now, due to the fact that he went to one camp as an NI draft pick, got cut...then went to camp the next year, and got cut, IIRC this second cut makes him a free agent as there is not a roster exception for 2nd-year draft picks like there is for current year draft picks.
Not entirely sure, but I think that's how it works. Could be wrong.

Doubt it. He's got lots of eligibility left.

                  Re: Assessment: Linebackers

With DM back as coach I see us keeping only one of the two(Mobes/Gass). We need youth and depth and Floyd, Sommersill, and abraham have good upsides to them> For example, if Floyd is ANYTHING like his cousin Otis we outta give him a chance to be an impact player.
We also need work at reciever and RB... Goldie had a good game but was virtually "picked up" by the legs and stopped at times. May compliment the power of Davis though.... but I'm still not sold!

His CIS eligibility year is listed as 2nd - maybe he redshirted (or whatever the term is) at Northern Michigan for one year without using up eligibility?

I don't know. But the CIS and the Bears list him as a 2nd year, so, good.
