Ya know DM has a point...

    Fourth and long
Coach Maciocia stays cool under fire
    By JONATHAN HUNTINGTON, SUN MEDIA

In the face of intense public criticism, Danny Maciocia is preaching patience.

With fans and media calling for the Edmonton Eskimos head coach to be fired, Maciocia wants more time to build a championship contender.

"If people are patient with this organization and these football players they are going to realize they are going to have themselves a special product for years to come," said Maciocia yesterday.

"If we are in the business of pushing panic buttons then they will realize quickly that you will always be starting over.

"It will take a few years in order for you to get something that you deem to be special. We are close. We have had some setbacks. Patience for some people hopefully isn't a four-letter word."

With the Eskimos in serious danger of missing the playoffs for back-to-back seasons - something that hasn't happened since 1964 and 1965 - calls for Maciocia to be fired are getting louder every week.

    LAID OUT HIS CASE

But in a very calm and collected fashion yesterday, the Eskimos' bench boss laid out his case to be retained for 2008.

"The reality is I think we got something really special here," he remarked. "I think the organization feels the same way. And I think a lot of those people in the locker room feel the same way.

"We are going to have certain choices, decisions to make here.

"We can keep it together or we can start from scratch again.

"But don't expect to be a playoff contender and compete for the Grey Cup if you are constantly starting from scratch."

The ultimate decision lies with Eskimo president and CEO Rick LeLacheur.

Like any smart business executive, LeLacheur isn't tipping his hand with three games to go in the regular season.

The Eskimos Tragic Number in the East Division is two, meaning any combination of Montreal wins and Edmonton losses that total two means the Green and Gold are out of the playoff race in the East.

In the West Division, the Tragic Number is one for Edmonton. If the Eskimos lose once or Calgary wins once the rest of the season, the playoff dream in the West is over.

The Eskimos play in Vancouver on Saturday night against the same Lions crew that won last weekend at Commonwealth Stadium.

It was that loss that really brought the calls for Maciocia's head to the forefront.

But the coach and director of football operations has almost become unaware of the criticism.

"Here is reality," quipped the Montreal native.

"You guys hold these microphones and I am the one answering the questions for the last three years. There comes a time when you just become numb to it.

"When they say you are good, it doesn't register. When they say you are bad, it doesn't register."

    YEAR 1

Maciocia believes this is really Year 1 for a new organization regime after he was bumped up to be director of football operations last winter - helping pick the talent with chief scout Paul Jones.

Yes, this is the third season for him as head coach, but the first with him calling all the critical shots on the football side of the business.

"The reality is that we have 65 guys here," said Maciocia, referring to all the injuries.

"Normally you go to camp with 68 - and we are still under the cap."

Maciocia is trying not to use the rash of injuries to key players as an excuse, but couldn't help himself.

"If we get guys like (Dan) Comiskey, Mathieu Bertrand, Ricky Ray...a Jason Tucker that can run back into the lineup," he stated before applauding his healthy defence.

"I think someone told me here who has been following this football team for 20 years that is one of the best defensive performances they have witnessed in the first half (last week).

"And there was some continuity there in the last few weeks."

      And a related story...

Esks players rally around their coach
      By JONATHAN HUNTINGTON, SUN MEDIA

If Kamau Peterson gets a vote, he wants Danny Maciocia to remain as Edmonton Eskimo head coach in 2008.

Although Maciocia is being blasted by critics who want him kicked out of town, Peterson is on the other side of the fence.

"I think he is doing an admirable job. I stand behind him 100%," said the well-spoken and respected seventh-year CFL veteran. "He hasn't lost the room. We have been through a lot as a team this year.

      'INJURIES'

"Granted everybody sustains injuries but we have lost a lot of starters at a lot of key points. Twenty new starters we had at the beginning of the year.

"We have been in virtually every game with a chance to win - we counted seven of them that we have lost in the last drive.

"If we win two or three of those it is a different season.

"I think the team that he has built here if we can keep this nucleus together - we have built a foundation for a very competitive and dominant team."

The Eskimos are last in the West Division with a terrible 5-9-1 record.

With a Tragic Number of two in the East Division and just one in the West Division, the playoffs seem like an impossible dream to most people following the Eskimos.

But bringing in a keg of dynamite and blowing up the organization is the last thing Peterson would suggest - and he has experience in this situation.

"I really pray that is not what happens," said Peterson to dynamite being used.

"Every team I have been on before this that is exactly what happens. What you will notice with good teams in the league is there is continuity. You don't see wholesale changes in B.C. or Toronto."

Middle linebacker A.J. Gass is also in Maciocia's corner.

"I think to put all the blame on the head coach is a little bit unfair," said Gass, the leader of the defence. "Coaches just coach - players play.

"It is up to the players to execute the game plan and when things don't work out and balls are dropped and tackles are missed that has nothing to do with the coach."

      AVOID CLEANING HOUSE

Gass wants the club's decision makers - mainly president and CEO Rick LeLacheur - to avoid cleaning house at the end of the year.

"I do think there are a group of guys - a lot of guys in this locker room - that are going to be very solid Eskimos in the future," he commented.

"And it would be a shame to blow it all up and rebuild considering that is what we are in the process of doing right now.

"It would be a waste of two seasons to clean house because you would be back to square one."

Yes he makes a point, but we are ok with the core of the players, we dont need to start over with that, the only thing we need to change is DM. And RC. Those changes have been a long time coming, and I think we're long past the point of pushing the panic button. I like the players, we have talent, we just need coaching.

Thing is with a New coach they could go and gut the team and bring in the people they want.... Like DM says , and I agree, We do have a good core of people

I think KP has been blinded by his camraderie with his team and coach. Maybe DM is a likeable guy, but he is not a good coach. He has proven this for the last three years. And yes I am including the grey cup year because they weren't particularily good that year either. If he somehow does stay on as coach, I predict another year of uninspired, lackluster play with the Esks fighting for the last playoff spot at the end of the season. Again. It will be a black eye and an embarrassment to the organization.

I don't want to clean house....we have about 5-6 players and 2-3 coaches where we need to make changes. Other than that I'm happy with our team.

Re: Ya know DM has a point...

EVERY team in the league has injuries, alot of teams in this league have lost their starting QB's. Injuries = not much of an excuse.

The CFL is not a league where you have to rebuild import talent, it is a league where you have to rebuild NI talent.

The moves, comments and general team building strategy by DM leaves me with low confidence that he is the one to 'rebuild'.

                  - Dumping a bunch if NI talent before camp. Cutting an extra NI guy who had been at camp and with the team all year, then being short of a canadian after an injury or two.

                  - Getting Lefsrud back, who really was not ready to resume his football career.

                  - A suspect draft in which a kicker is drafted #2 overall to groom to replace Fleming. After a couple of good games in a row by Fleming DM says he wants him to come back for another year or two and he'd be working at resigning him.

                  - Bringing in a QB to much ballyhoo and then finding out the guy can't throw worth a damn and cutting him a week later.

                  - Spending a ton of resources on secondary players, a position that is about the easiest to find players for and a position that Paul Jones has always done a good job of finding.

                  - Pumping up guys to the extreme only to dump then a short time later. (Perriman, Baggs, Nugent, Nedd)

                  - Getting abused in the Glen Carson/Jonathan Landon deals.

Now, he does deserve credit for some good moves as well. The Fiaccone and Barranechia deals look like nice moves in my mind.

What I want to see out of my GM is someone who has a real long range plan who doesn't fall in and out of love with players at an alarming rate.

If he wanted some patience and leeway, the year after the cup win he should have said 'We are in rebuild mode, have patience for a few years.' The time you hear coaches or gms preaching patience is when their team sucks. I expect DM to be the gm for the next few years so the proof will be in the pudding as far as what moves he makes.

Here is a question for the masses preaching patience for the inner workings of the organization. How much patience do you have?

After the 1st 6 games of the Grey Cup winning year 6-6
                    Last year 7-11, miss playoffs
This year 5-9-1, probably will miss playoffs.

Constantly? Are we constantly doing that? No.

When something is broken you fix it. See Saskatchewan Roughriders.

That is exactly the statement you'd expect from someone trying to save their job.

Our embarrassing situation with our NI talent -- injuries not withstanding -- is the part that really makes me frustrated with this team.

And THAT isn't the fault of the players...

Bottom line is that I am NOT TOLERATING ANOTHER YEAR LIKE THIS NEXT YEAR.
                          Period.
When you don't know that you don't know, it's a lot different than when you do know that you don't know.

First and foremost, I think Paul Jones needs to go.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

One can debate whether he has done a good enough job or not that is for sure. Some positions he has done a great job in filling, others not that good and the fact that most of our pick ups seem to be from Louisianna is a concern. However our bigger problem is our NI strength at this time in my mind.

Hopefully scout extraordinaire Hervey will find us some California gems.

Diesel will know this, has Ed Hervey been out doing any scouting during the season or will this only happen after the season is over?
