      Ithink Rick came in after the 03 cup. And Danny was brought in to the esks by Don Matthews

        No Mathews and DM never worked together.

        From the Esks site:

          So Rick was here for the 04 season. So maybe he had a hand in picking the HC but make no mistake about it Hugh was the guy that made the final decision on that deal.

            Emphasis on the was. IMO, Campbell was a great coach and GM who somehow lost it near the end. I think he held on about three years too long. He sowed the seeds of this crop failure we're now enduring. Now we desperately need a good football guy running the farm.

              I listened to John Short for around 20 years and can tell that you never really listened to him. He was always polite to his callers (unlike BH) and was quite knowledgeable in a number of different sports, major and minor league alike (also unlike BH)!! He could talk about CFL, NFL, NHL, MLB, college basketball, boxing, motorsports and the guests he had on made those topics very interesting. But for some reason, in the last few years, he set his sights on the Eskimo organization and I have always wondered why that was?? I know that he did not used to be like that...

              To me it was never about what I accomplished on the football field, it was about the way I played the game.

                I thought everybody in town new who was responsible for hiring Stephenson...apparently, I was wrong. It was Higgins!! They went back many years (both were in Buffalo in the 70's IIRC) and the story I heard was that Hugh was already planning his departure from the team and since Higgins was the 'assistant GM' he let him make the choice. In hindsight, that was the wrong guy for the job, but at some point you have to let the other guy(s) start making decisions.

                To me it was never about what I accomplished on the football field, it was about the way I played the game.

                  It sould be noted that John Short has had a major axe to grind with Hugh Campbell since the Esks sold the Trappers a few years ago. Short probably makes a somewhat valid point here but he's had such a major hate-on for Hughie & Glen Sather for so long, it's difficult to take anything he says about either one of them without a grain of salt.

                    Did he dislike Glen? I know he always spoke well of Peter Pocklington.

                      I recall John saying that he once wrote that aroun 93/94 that he felt that Glen was trying help move the oilers out of Edmonton. Since then they have never really gotten along.

                        Although I'd question the "always" part, John Short was generally tougher on Sather than he was on Pocklington. Short spent the last few years of Slats' run as Oilers' GM dumping on him on a nightly basis on the radio. Yesterday's column makes brief reference to it.

                            Fair enough. Short was usually respectful towards Pocklington stemming from his brief time working for the Oilers at a time when Sather was just the team's coach.

                                Huh? You are once again reading things into my post that I never said. I agree with you on all of John Shorts positive points and his knowledge of all of those sports. I said he was much like Bryan Hall in that he is very unwilling to be really critical of these guys as long as they are still part of the team (at least the last few years). Afterwards he has no problem being very critical. He was never all over Sather or Campbell until after they had given the reigns to someone else.
