    Esks Pick Up Pikula

That first round pick is looking better all the time, eh?

    Eskimos acquire kicker from Lions

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos have acquired non-import kicker/punter Rob Pikula and a third round selection (23rd overall) in the 2008 CFL Canadian Draft from the BC Lions in exchange for Edmonton’s third round selection (18th overall) in this years’ Draft.

Signed as a free agent with Saskatchewan in 2006, Pikula was a late cut from the ‘Riders training camp. He signed in June 2006 with BC and appeared in three games for the Lions that season. In June 2007, Pikula was dealt to Winnipeg for a conditional draft pick in the 2008 CFL Canadian Draft. The former Western Ontario star played in 15 games for the Blue Bombers last season, primarily as the punter, but Pikula demonstrated excellent proficiency when called on to handle field goals and kickoffs. He enjoyed his best game as a pro on August 10 at BC Place when he led the Bombers to 22 – 21 win over the Lions. On that night, Pikula was good on three field goals, including a 33 yard game winner. Pikula finished the season on the injured list and did not dress for the playoffs or Grey Cup. He was dealt back to BC in an off-season trade for defensive back Sebastian Clovis.

Eskimo Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Danny Maciocia says “ Rob has the ability to handle all facets of the kicking game and he’s excelled whenever he’s been given the opportunity”.

At least we don't waste another draft pick on a kicker this year. Do we?

Probably either one of 3 scenarios will play out:

        1. TC fodder
        2. 1/1A player at the position
        3. A Canadian specializing in either punting or FGs

Don't throw Kean under the bus just yet. He had the best teacher last year in Wad, and he hasn't even been given game action yet. IMO we shouldn't read too much into this.

The Riders had Pikula in their training camp a few years ago. He was actually a better punter than Congi, but Congi was more accurate at fg's.

That's what I noticed at camp anyway.

You heard it here first. I said many months ago that, whether we liked it or not, kicking was going to be a real issue with this football team this year. I could tell way back then.

            Cheers,

            SH

Well Epstein ( Import ? ) could be gone.. if Kean cant do both, i'd rather have 2 NI kicking...

Esks don't really give a damn about the Canadian draft. Pat Fleming is available who is a good pinter though.

                        Re: Esks Pick Up Pikula

Keane was a horrendously bad pick, end of story. Not because he is a lousy kicker, I think he will be our starting Fg kicker next year and be pretty good but because he was taken with the 2nd choice overall and the Eskimos seemingly didn't have a clue about his true abilities or lack there of as a punter.

If you actually look back at Wad's stats, you'll notice wad didn't do everything his first few years either, but turned out to be a helluva eskimo. Just think the organization doesn't want to throw the pressure of the team on Kean's shoulders in his first full year on the active roster. I think it's all part of grooming him into being a player like wad.
