I think they're starting to get it...

...is there enough time before Thursday?

Eskimos running backs must work together to kick-start ground attack: head coach Maciocia

    Tuesday, Jul 8, 2008

A.J. Harris, Ron (Goldie) McClendon and Damien Anderson may be after the same job, but they're not after each other's throats.

The trio of Edmonton Eskimos running backs made light of their potentially awkward situation on Monday, prior to a three-hour practice. At one point, McClendon jokingly attempted to rescue Anderson from an oncoming media scrum, grabbing his teammate by the arm and pulling him away, screaming, "Save yourself!" Later, while stretching on the field at the start of practice, McClendon and Harris broke into song, serving up an off-key rendition of the theme to the 1990's sitcom The Wayans Bros.

All three men know, though, that they have the very serious job of stopping the Eskimos' running game from becoming a Canadian Football League joke.

    ...

Hallelujah. Here's hoping we see renewed emphasis on the ground vs TOR.

With the wide assortment of backs we've had through here, yet largely the same result... I think the problem lies more in the system and the o-line, if those two things don't change, just handing the ball off more I'm not sure is going to do much.

But, I guess on the bright side, at least the problem is being acknowledged
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

I wanna see more running, but I also want to see what type of passing game we'll have.... dink and dunk, or are we actually going to challenge them deep?

I'd bet on dink n dunk...

I think we have an O-line that will be able to open holes and tee-off on guys. Especially with the different style of runners. That said we'll see how the scheme looks and if it actually happens.

I agree that it's scheme and not personnel....or perhaps personnel not matching the scheme, and scheme not being adjusted to fit current personnel.

If you hand it off 5 yards deep, you need a guy like Troy Davis who can read the field and make cuts....this is tough considering all our RBs are young.

If we attack the defense head on, then we need the RB moving toward the line early so that the ends don't have a chance to come around the edge and getting into the backfield before the handoff...the only way to counter an end getting around the tackle early is to have the tackle to have more of a pass block and push the end with his own momentum...however, you are then not attacking the defense, and leaving holes open for LBs to fill.

We need consistency, we need a plan, everyone needs to be working together....otherwise, it doesn't matter who is getting the ball.

So would I. But then, I'm not all that surprised...this ain't Calgary's secondary. I would throw downfield once in a while, yes, but against Wheaton/Steinauer/B. Parker etc.? You're probably not going to have as much success as we did vs CGY.

All that being said, if we can somehow get a run game going, then we ought to be able to throw downfield more easily...contrary to the past two years against them. Which is why this is so bloody important...and it's nice to see the coach(es) finally starting to realize it.

It took someone to hold a gun to DM s head and say learn adapt or you are Gone. Wish RL would have done this after the 1st year we missed the post season. :-P

You get the feeling, don't you, that this year DM was thinking...

"...Man, nothing I try for the last two years has worked. Maybe this year I'll follow the advice on Esksfans, and see how that goes."

                      I'll bet, a lot better.

We'll see if they have it figured out. Not betting the farm.

Beat an argo umbrella defence? I'd script the first 20 plays as such:

                          Approx D&D- (1 &10)

                          1. QB under center. Slot in motion to the weak side, single WR strong side. 1 back set. B gap handoff to the right side.

                          (2 & 6)

                          2. Pistol formation. Back in I formation. 3WR Right side(weak side flood patterns), 2 WR strong side. Pump fake to Tuck (ss) on an 8yd out, hit Campbell on a drag route to the area the weak side WR's are clearing out.

                          (1 &10)

                          3. Pistol. Back in I formation. 3WR WS, strong side slot tight to LOS, SS WR. Halfback counter play to the left side, QB fakes option and rolls out to the weak side drawing the LB

                          (2 & 4)

                          4. QB under center. 2 back set. Bertrand in motion to the left edge. Play action fake pitch to the right side HB, full back screen to the weak side.

                          (1 & 10)

                          5. Single back set pistol formation. 3WR SS. Play action fake. Weak side sideline out.

                          (2 & 7)

                          6. Pistol, back in I formation motions forward prior to snap. 4WR WS. Right side trap.

                          (1 & 10)

                          7. Run opening play. Reverse sides

                          (2 & 6)

                          8. Pistol. HB on right side. 3WR WS - two motion to SS. Run delay draw

                          (1 & 10)

                          9. Pistol, back in I. Tucker & Ralph SS. Play action weak side, Ralph on a 20 yd post route from the SS WR spot, hit Tuck on an underneath 12 yd SS out to sidelines.

                          (1 &10)

                          10. QB under center. 2 back set. Split receivers. FB cheats to the SS , run HB screen WS.

                          (2 & 3)

                          11. Qb under center. 2 back set. Smashmouth quick hitter right side A gap.

                          (1 & 10)

                          12. Pistol, HB left side. 3WR SS. KP8 from WS slot crosses over middle to push out the backer. SS inside slot streak pattern, SS WR flag pattern, find Ralph on the delay crossing route over the the weakside seam created by flooding the SS.

                          (1 & 10)

                          13. Pistol, HB right side. 3 WR SS. Play action to WS. Ray waggles right, Jones gives up his block, and ray dumps over the left side Dlineman to HB off tackle.

                          (2 & 5)

                          14. Run Play 9 to weak side, no play action.

                          (1 &10)

                          15. QB under center. 1 back set. HB counter to right side

                          (2 & 6)

                          16. Qb under center. 2 back formation. Play action left side lead, Qb rolls right and looks deep on sideline route. 2nd read is underneath sideline out SS

                          (1 & 10)

                          17. Pistol formation, HB I formation, 2 WS WR, 3 SS WR. Play action fake, HB moves to line to pass block and releases past the line after a waggle pump fake. Naked center screen.

                          (2 & 1)

                          18. QB under center, 2 back set. Lead block power run right side B gap

                          (1 & 10)

                          19. Run play 12 to opposite side. KP as receiver on the drag.

                          (2 & 3)

                          20. Play 11 to left side B gap.

Methodology is when the argos defence is not playing run stop, then we have them moving sideline to sideline in both coverage and pursuit. O'Shea has to be forced to cover across the middle taking him as wide as possible when possible. Screens and counters enhance the misdirection capability again forcing the argos to employ more bodies on a wide horizontal plane rather than in staggered levels. Whenever possible early, use force on anything 2nd and 4 or less.

Keep running the soft underneath sideline outs to disguise it as an outlet. Later in the game add another receiver to that side to clear out the DB and turn that into an out and up for big yardage.

The key is balance, misdirection and showing multiple looks from multiple offensive sets with varying matchups to later exploit holes. When the DB's start cheating or the umbrella is forced out of zone then you exploit man coverages.
I will not, for a moment longer, support an organization who chooses to cowardly kneel where they once fiercely & proudly stood
