    Thursdays Game After Effects

Talking to some of my friends over the past few days, there is a buzz around the city about that game. People are still talking about the game saying what an unreal game it was to watch. Some are even saying they are wanting to go to the rematch game come September.

On the radio, lots of people were calling in and saying they will start watching CFL football and Esks football again because of that game. There was one guy who called in to Gregor's show and said he took his three kids to the game and they are looking at going to the next game because his little kids want to go.

Is anyone else noticing this as well or am I just the only one? This is nothing but good news for the Esks AND for the CFL in my opinion.

I've heard buzz about that game since Thursday...Its reminiscent of the Labour day rematch game we had here when it was uh, either Tom Meucke (sp) or cody Ledbetter that led a last second come from behind win against the Stamps - and IIRC it was a monsterous crowd there too..

      That was Cody (Ledbetter)..

One of my all-time favorite Eskimo football memories.. Not so much for that last second touchdown as it was was for the way Alondra Johnson threw his helmet down in disgust on the ground after the touchdown and he kept it off for the convert. This was before the helmet rules came into effect.

Watching the game afterwards film I said to myself that if he ever did that again I'd go after him and make him pay for being so arrogant and disprespectful as to take his helmet off and leave it off during a play... IN OUR HOUSE!! (My hatred for the Stamps ran deep)...

A couple of years later (I think it was 2001) sure enough AJ took his helmet off once again during a convert while he was lined up across from me at Commonwealth and true to my word- I ran out at him and I dropped him.. AJ's helmet went flying and he ended up on his back.

I believe that was the last time AJ ever took his helmet off after a convert.

Yeah, I remember that one. Darren Flutie caught the winning TD pass right under the goal post.

Oh man. That was a GREAT ending to any game I have seen in a long long time. Our section went nuts when Flutie caught that ball. Unreal. I think I was hugging strangers that night as well, just like this past Thursday.

          Great memories indeed!!!

My son works nights so is unable to attend Thursday games very often, but he attended this game with me. He's still raving about this game, which was the best game he's ever seen in person, he says. I've seen bigger comebacks, like 27 points down in the fourth quarter against Hammie back in Clarke Stadium in the rain. That definitely was one great comeback last week. We were hugging all around.

Isn't it now a GOOD THING that the Esks did NOT black out these games?

Lest we forget another late game drive just after going down by 4 to Calgary about a year ago in a similar game....

People need to learn that Esks and Stamps games are always entertaining, and you should never ever leave early with the skill levels of both teams.

Matt Dunnigan to Stephon Jones a number of years ago. Might have been the 1st game of the year if I recall.

                      Yup.

I'd imagine all the people who caught this game on TV are a hell of a lot more likely to go to our game next SATURDAY against the TiCats.

It's amazing - it's like, because so many more people were exposed to the game, they're more likely to go to the game.

                      Crazy logic, I know...

And the fact is, we gotta go back and go to work, to make sure we finish this next time. That's all we gotta do. This right here makes us stronger. Let's understand who we are as a team. Let's understand this right here makes us stronger." - Ray Lewis, January, 2012.

I could be wrong on this, but I heard TOR/HAM have regularly lifted their home blackouts over the past few years.

Their attendance has decreased or stayed relatively stagnant because fans there know the game will be on TV and thus don't feel the need to go buy a ticket.

(unconfirmed, just something I read on another board).

I agree with your point, personally, but I also think the effect of blackouts/lifting does depend on what market you're in.

Yeah - but those teams have sucked.

There's been a ton of studies done on it... blackouts are bad, very, very, bad.

The best case example is the Blackhawks, who were damn near killed by Wirtz and his blackouts if the place wasn't sold out. There's too many other entertainment options available today to try and force people to the game by blacking it out. All it does is piss off customers and reduce the likelihood they'll feel the need to go the game.

                          It's an archaic, failing, model...

I don't think it's a matter of market as much as the quality of the team. Lifting the blackouts increases the potential local audience, so if your team puts on a good performance it leads to increased interest in the game and ticket sales go up. Conversely, if the team typically plays like crap, more are likely to stay home and watch the game on TV saving money and the time for the commute.

Ultimately, I feel blacking out home games is a strategy used by management teams that are too lazy to focus on the quality of the onfield product and would rather focus on extorting their real football fans into the park by the virtue of there being no other choice. This is especially true right now since Radio (Brian Hall) isn't currently an option for football coverage in Edmonton.

Removing blackouts lets the product generate or kill the interest which is the way it should be.

                              Agreed, and agreed.

Doesn't explain Hamilton though - their crowds have gone DOWN in recent weeks, despite the quality of the team going WAY up. Could be the economy, could be the weather (especially for our game there), but they've had 20k and 19k for their last two home games, down from 22k for their first two.
