    Contenders or Pretenders?

So we saw that eventhough we came into yesterday alone in first place, we sure didn't act like it to start the game, or at any point thereafter. Now the question is with two other teams now joining us in first, are we going to come out and show that we're capable and deserving of being a first place team or are we just content to be close?

Guys like Romero, Bertrand, KP, Nowacki, Kabongo, Maurer, and Maas have a big task in front of them as Eskimo vets to correct the psyche of this team in a hurry.
I will not, for a moment longer, support an organization who chooses to cowardly kneel where they once fiercely & proudly stood

We are contenders because in my mind we have played like S*** in a lot of games this year and are still over .500

We will be true contenders if the braintrusts of the team, gm and coach say. 'We are lucky to be 5-4 we better upgrade some positions' rather than 'We are 5-4! We are a good team that needs minor tweaking.'

It also looks like the Eskimos are adopting the NFL philosophy of being deceitful about injuries. We've had about 4 guys with 'out for a couple games' injuries out for well over that.

This is 2001 all over again up to this point.

We show we are on the verge of the big breakthrough one week and we play like dog**** the next.

This team has the makings of a contender but we are a still missing a few key cogs. And like 2001, some of those cogs are currently sitting on the sidelines injured.

Unlike 2001, they aren't season-enders *fingers crossed* and we still have the potential to run away with this division. The next three weeks: vs. Calgary, @ Riders, vs. Riders...should tell us if this team can rebound from an utterly devastating loss or if this team takes the form of previous years.

      It's up to them...

I see us at 6-6 in three weeks' time. But our last six games are a much easier schedule. So it ain't gonna be pretty in the short term, but there is still time for these guys to pull it together.
Out of my mind; back in five minutes.

The way we've played, we're lucky to be where we are.

That said, I think we've underachived so far and are capable of playing at a higher level. I hate to use the old excuse, but we've had some important injuries and may be getting these guys back soon. We have a decent schedule down the stretch and I am expecting this team to have more than 10 wins.

I don't like to overreact after one painfull loss, so I will still say "contenders". At least this team looks like it has more "potential" to be a contender than they have since 2005. With parity in the CFL, at least in the West, as tight as it is, there is a very fine line between contender and mediocre. And every team has talented athletes that are paid just as much, train just as hard, and are just as passionate and competetive as the Eskimos, to be the team on top. As a fan, all I can hope for is that they get over the hump, and find themselves on the right side of that line. They still control their own destiny!!

The entire west has been very hot and cold this year... hell, other then Montreal no one has been terribly consistent, and even they seem to be entering their typical slow second half.

The west is going to be a dog fight, and whoever gets hot in November will end up in the Grey Cup... we just need to make sure we get there
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

The 2009 Eskimos are like that Chrissie Hynde band "The Contenders"

If by contenders you mean for the cup, I think not this year but I do think we will get a home gate. This defence is way too soft for any championship. I don`t think we are that bad but on the other hand how much have we improved. I think this year is more representitive of the bounces going our way. Don`t get me wrong, I like the wins but they are mostly coming at home and none have been blow outs. I think Montreal has to be the clear favourite.

On a side note why did they leave Ray in so long?

pretenders more than contenders... Too much still wrong with the team for people to consider them bona fide contenders..

Esks are still a work in progress. They are midways IMO.

then again when you have Ricky Ray as your Quarterback - even as a pretender you can hit a hot streak and become contenders in a blink of an eye...

It's a small league so if you catch lightning in a bottle you can win it all as long as you make the playoffs.

yep.... and there's a better chance to succeed when Ray is your QB

Still missing a bruising running back to get the hard 2 or 3 yards when we need them. Bertrand is hurt too much to depend on game in and game out.
O line needs more consistency which will probably only come with better talent in some positions.
Defense needs quite a bit of work in order to shut down the good teams.
Rookie head coach makes some poor decisions at times but he is learning and hasn't cost us any games.
I would say we are pretenders at this point in time unless we get some good NFL cuts coming in.
