    Wildcat coming soon?

Sorry if this was already posted, but I didn't see it anywhere and was expecting it to be up here already:

Could be a very interesting season...

Yeah, the wildcat didn't really catch on up North last year... I think it was Calgary that tried it early in the season on one play and it blew up in their faces and no one tried it again after that
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

It could be a way to get Z some more reps and playing time in meaningful games without taking Ray out of the game.

wish they would just keep everything playbook related under wraps.

i know the piece is actually nothing more fluff, but i like to keep the opponents totally oblivious! lol

We tried it one play last year with Zabransky and McCarty promptly got hurt on the play.

I agree with cmbuk. Barnes shouldn't have said anything about this play at all. Now everyone will be looking for it.
Maybe they need to stick to writing about some US rookie coming into camp. I wouldn't want to be the rookie though...we always cut em. This year I think it was the next day or the second day after the story was written.

Can someone clear this up for me.

If they use the wildcat, would Z be inserted as the RB and get the direct snap? Would Z be split out as a receiver?

I'm just not seeing the fit really. My understanding of the wildcat is that you want a RB that can be a threat to throw (ala Ronnie Brown in Miami), not so much a QB that's a threat to run. I may be off on this, but it seems to me that a package designed for Z would consist of options, zone reads and moving the pocket around to take advantage of his mobility strengths.

Are you allowed to have two designated QBs on the field at the same time? I know you couldn't a few seasons ago, but when they introduced those wildcat rules before last season, the rules regarding QBs changed a bit if I'm not mistaken.

A wildcat will never be more than a trick play like a fake punt or Field Goal. Keep one or two in the playbook but never count on them.
Run the Ball up the gut around the horn it does not matter. We run we win what is so difficult to understand.

That was a straight option play not a wildcat set

I'll correct that. The CFL wildcat that still needs to have a designated QB on the field is a trick play. A true wildcat set is a whole section to the playbook that should be explored more. Would do wonders with some CIS institutions that don't have a clear cut stud at QB.

No, the rule deviation is that the QB previously HAD to line up directly behind center. That is no longer the case.

BTW, here is the wiki run down of the Wildcat or single wing....

Didn't the Eagle deploy a form of this with both McNabb and Vick on the feild at the same time?

                            Re: Wildcat coming soon?

I still fail to see how the Wildcat is a formation that can utilize the talents of Z. The Wildcat, from what I read/understand, is about getting the ball in the hands of someone other than the QB as the primary carrier/distributor. Reading the Wikipedia link that Opus posted, it refers to an example where the wildcat was put in by the Carolina Panthers because of a QB injury... meaning that they were wanting to avoid putting the ball in the backup QB's hands.

Is it just the media latching onto a buzzword and mis-using it?

I don't think we'll see much of a wildcat to be honest. I think this is a smokescreen to mask a package of mobility plays
