Practice ain't making perfect

MONCTON, N.B. — First they can’t play.

Now they aren’t even any good at practising.

The idea was that a 10-day road trip would bring the Edmonton Eskimos together. And maybe that would result in an inspired team representing the west in Touchdown Atlantic.

You wouldn’t know it from the way they’ve practiced.

Wednesday head coach Richie Hall called them “sluggish.”

Thursday he called the team to the middle of Rocky Stone Field at the end of practice and had a talk about it that lasted a long time.

“It was better than yesterday. But it seemed like they dragged it out. It just seemed it took us time to get organized with everything we were doing,” said the beleaguered head coach.

“A lot of it looked like it was laziness.

“It really seemed like it dragged at the end.

“The day before it seemed like they were going through the motions.

He knows that Hall is a dead duck, which is why he won't wait to slag him now. Keep the talk away from the guys who will be around...and fire both barrels at those who won't be around to throw up blockades to his access later on.

Never mind his access to the players, coaches and management, but also the Game Day Programs - if he still produces them.

Jones used to be an excellent columnist, especially when he was with the Journal. Now days, he's very average unless something happens to fall in his lap.

Sluggish in games and sluggish in practices. Seems like Hall can't motivate this team no matter what.

Any word as to how they do in airports while travelling? Sluggish there too?

Hall has to go now, why wait for season's end. Get Dave Ritchie in there for the rest of the season to kick some serious ass.

Message to the players: I have been a fan of the Eskimos since I began watching football (1970's) and I have a great respect not only for this organization but for the city and all of its fans as well. If you do not have it in you to wear the green and gold colours with pride then please do everyone a favour and get off of the field and get out of the city and find something else to do. I live in Hamilton, Ont. and I visit Edmonton at least once a year to spend time in the city and take in an Eskimos game. Before the game I always look around the stadium at the loyal fans waiting to cheer for their beloved Green and Gold and I notice the Wall of Honour. Like most fans I read the names and think back and remember their careers and how these players distinguished themselves not only on the football field but in the community as well. It is not a right to wear the Eskimos uniform it is a privilege. Remember that every time you don that uniform and if you can't then please have enough respect for the organization, the city, the fans and yourselves as well and please leave!

It's sad that the players seems to have tuned Hall out. I know he is a decent hardworking coach but maybe his personality is not suited to motivate the players? In any case a lot of them are going to be gone after this season if they cannot motivate themselves regardless of who is the coach.

On the flip side.....all year long we've heard how great the team has been practicing each week leading up to a game....

Sometimes it's not that the head coach is a bad one, just that his style doesn't match with the current batch of players. Lots of successful coaches have switched teams and bombed in their new environment. Hall might be a great coach for an already-successful team that simply needs a gentle hand and protection from the media. This team needs regular and repeated kicks in the pants. They need an army general to send them to boot camp.

Hall might be a great success somewhere else. But here, we need to tie a can to him ASAP.

It just seems that this team needs a coach whereby the players view privileges as privileges and not as something that is expected or a foregone conclusion?

It's unfortunate, but when Hall is gone, if the Eskimos get a disciplinarian type coach in here, the players will realize just how good they had it under Hall. And, before anyone jumps to any conclusions, I'm not suggesting they should hire someone in the mold of Vince Lombardi or Frank Kush, either.
