    Mongo Benched?????????

    http://www.edmontonsun.com/2011/08/2...tition-on-esks

Is the offensive lineman, who Danny Maciocia made the second-highest paid player on the Edmonton Eskimos roster, about to be benched?

“I spoke to Pat Sunday,” said head coach Kavis Reed prior to practice Monday as he brought his Humpty Dumpties back from the bye week break to try put them back together again, after they gave up 18 sacks in the last three weeks.

“I told him we’re opening the left guard position up to competition.

“He knows we’re now looking at that position.

“There are things, technical things, involving Pat we have to address.”

The technical things, he said, involve Kabongo’s hands.

“He’s taking a lot of holding penalties,” said Reed.

“It’s been a cause for concern.

“Drive. Drive. Drive. Penalty,” he said.
Run the Ball up the gut around the horn it does not matter. We run we win what is so difficult to understand.

Sounds more like a little motivation to me. It is true that he gets a decent amount of holding calls but given the amount of injuries and changes on the O-line how would it serve a purpose to replace Kabongo?
    New coach, different results?

quick count on the cfl.ca tracker (so room for error in both ), Kabongo has been called for holding twice in the past 3 games, one of which was declined. Maybe they saw more on the game film, but he was not the worst offender in the losses. We'll see what happens with the shake up. edit - he did take a couple of illegal block calls, but they had nothing to do with what Kavis appears to be talking about. I don't know how much vCash I'll be throwing the Esks way on Monday.

Hope, at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are

From personal observation Kabongo has always blocked with his hands wide and outside in a wide clutch from day 1 as an o-lineman. When Pat's hands go outside the cylinder he is opening himself up to holding calls on virtually every play. Look it up.

Not a revelation, I guess the revelation is he is getting called for it this year.

I remember back in the day our Coach in high school taped the O-Lines Fingers closed so they could learn to only block with the heel of their hands. It seemed to work for us could it work in the pro's???

I really like Kabongo...but I gotta say my perception of him is that his actual performance as a lineman, compared to my expectations, has not been the same.

In my view, he has slightly under performed in my view.

Pats penalties are old news. I used to have an ongoing bet with him, for every game he got a penalty he owed me $20, and for every game he didnt I would give him $10. Yes, I always came out on top. Even when I came up to visit in 09, he paid up at dinner, maybe I should give him a call and collect.

I've always thought Mongo got victimized a bit simply because he is so massive and strong. There are times that he simply overpowers guys where normally a guy would have had to hold to get the same result. Yet you go back on the replay, and it really wasn't.....

....I certainly see a lot more holding by name guys game in and game out that they seem to let go.

                          Hell of an idea
I will not, for a moment longer, support an organization who chooses to cowardly kneel where they once fiercely & proudly stood

I felt that one of his holding calls last game was a result of bailing out his tackle, who got roasted, and saved his QB from taking a full-on shot.

I agree with Huskies, that this might be more of a warning shot across the bow and a motivation-oriented approach by opening up his spot to competition. If he's not able to beat out a sophomore newcomer to the system or a draft pick, then the spot should rightfully be up for grabs. While a lot has been wrong with our pass protection, and not 100% of it involving the O-line in isolation, I have to wonder about the effect that removing a vocal leader like Kabongo would have in the absence of Fiaconni. It's not out of the question, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Another idea that works at the minor levels is taping oven mitts to their hands. Blocking with less feel involved and more brains.
