(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos have signed free agent import defensive tackle Josh Leonard to a practice roster agreement, the club announced today.
A product of the University of Hawaii, Leonard signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009 and spent most of the season on the Bucs’ practice roster. In 2010, Leonard had a brief stint with the Houston Texans before signing with the the UFL’s Sacramento Mountain Lions.
Before transferring to Hawaii, where he was a starter in his senior year, Leonard racked up 33 sacks in two seasons at Cierra Junior College in California.
Eskimo General Manager Eric Tillman says, “Josh is a strong and quick interior player. He bench pressed 225 pounds 41 times on his pro day evaluation. Josh can bull rush guys, split the double team and, for a big man, can redirect and pursue very well. Once he learns the nuances of the CFL game, Josh will give our staff an interesting interior option."
