Esks pushing for annual Thanksgiving Day Classic against the Riders...

    http://www.torontosun.com/2011/10/06...-new-tradition

Personally as a Rider fan Im not cool with this. Why should the Esks get a regular game like this at home. Its a huge unfair advantage if this is a yearly game at this time of year when the stakes normally would be high. I know thats not the case this year for the Riders, but eventually it will be for both teams, and home games this time of year against western opponents are HUGE.

Additionally, a game on a long weekend should be shared amongst teams. Id personally prefer to road trip to Calgary or Vancouver for such a game from time to time, or host a thanksgiving game in Regina.
How can Edmonton just call the shots for something like this.

I hope this is denied by the league. Seems like an underhanded tactic by Tillman here...

How can they justify calling the first of something a "classic"?

Oh, and chub, before those panties of yours get into too big a wad, the league would have to sign off on it (and I'd imagine the Riders would have to consent if they'd be the regular opponent), just like any number of other things teams lobby for things, even your precious Riders. The Eskimos are no more "calling the shots" than the Riders did to host the 2013 Grey Cup... they can make a case and ask, but after that it's out of their hands.

Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

I like the idea myself. Even better is the idea of alternating the location each year. I wish that would be done for the labor day series.

So you won't mind alternating the Labour Day classic with Winnipeg every second year then?

        ....
        ....

I didn't think so, your arguments don't apply to your team right? You only object to them when it's a team other than the Riders right Chub? If what you said were true then from here on out Winnipeg will host every second Labour Day game.....as it's on a long weekend too......*sigh*

Interesting that it was the Riders who moaned and bitched for a salary cap, and since a cap was put in place for them, they only years they've won they broke the salary cap rules.

Hey Gris, the Labour Day tradition has been entrenched for years, and its not a competitive disadvantage since its an east vs. west scenario. Additionally, I think most Bomber fans love hosting the rematch/banjo bowl, and wouldnt want it the other way around. Personally if Winnipeg wanted the LDC every second year, Id be cool with it as long as the Riders got the Banjo Bowl every 2nd year.

You assume I wouldnt be OK with the switch. Get your head out of ur arse, Im not like you. I dont see things with a hate-on for the esks. My arguments above were completely objective. Id be as upset with this if Calgary or BC were trying to pull this tomfoolery.

I like the idea it makes sense for a long weekend game to be in the city with the largest stadium ala The Detroit Lions Thanksgiving day series. Its great for the league to have large crowds as many games as possible.

I have heard of fans making excuses for their teams before a game they think they will lose. But you don't have to start making excuses years in advance. Even i would have more faith than you if i were in your position

Personally I believe that any traditions that you can establish is great for the league and great for marketing the league. Look at how successful Labour Day and starting games on Canada Day (a much more recent tradition) have been. If you're concerned about the esks getting an unfair advantage (don't see how though as a game in July is worth 2 points just like it is in October) that's fine then alternate it. I think it would be a great idea if they could somehow schedule 4 games between the same two clubs on Thanksgiving day weekend. What they had this week end with Winnipeg/Hamilton, BC/Calgary, Toronto/Montreal, and Edmonton/Saskatchewan would be great IMO. Thansgiving is a great opportunity to establish another tradition as far as I'm concerned. I'm all for it.

Reading the first post makes me feel like I'm standing on the wrong side of a manure spreader.

Chub can you read??? The article says that it would be nice to start another tradition, having a game on thanksgiving and maybe even alternating locations every second year. No where did it say that the Esks are forcing the league to do it. Wholly pushing the panic button. What would it matter if the Riders had a road game in Calgary or BC at this time of year instead of Edmonton, your thought makes no sense. Its an 8 team league, you play 18 games you have to play somebody in October.????????????

I would not mind the Thanksgiving day weekend going like the Labour Day weekend, where you have traditional rivals playing each other in the same place. I do not buy the arguement about labour day in Riderville being East/West as it has not always been that way, and when Ottawa comes back into the league it may not be that way anymore as Winnipeg could move back to the west. What I would like to see is the teams that do not host on Labour day Weekend host the Thanksgiving day weekend. That would mean Edmonton, Winnipeg, BC, and Montreal (this year, but Toronto other years). Make them against Divisional rivals (like this year) and the league can really sell it as the final push for the playoffs.

What difference does it make where/when the Esks and Riders play? Didn't hear Chub bleating when Riders got to host the Esks at the beginning of this season....or about the fact that we see the in-breds again at C'Wealth on November 4th.

Tradition or not, I am not in favour of having the same teams play on the same dates year after year. With so few teams, you want to create as much variety as possible. I hate back to back games and the albour Day where both teams have to play 2 games in 5 days. If you have to have the Labour Day classic then spread the time between games farther apart.
