Article on Michael Soles' ALS battle...

. I remember my first EMG appointment in early March 2005. I remember the look of concern on my nurse’s face when she told me she needed to repeat the examination because my original results were “ABNORMAL.” I remember looking at the header of my patient file “MALE, MARRIED, AGE 38, FATHER OF 3.” I remember saying to my wife when the nurse left the room that “THIS CAN’T BE GOOD.” I remember what followed was a barrage of more medical tests, which, in the end, gave no firm diagnosis but confirmed that I had some motor neurone disease, of which “ALS was the most common” of the very rare disease options. That was eight years ago. I now realize that I am truly a very lucky person.
Did not know he had this. Best of luck in his continued battle...

Wow, that's tragic. My grandmother had ALS... it's a horrible condition. Sounds like he's doing remarkably well considering he's had it for 8 years.
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

Prayers are with him. He's one of ours always. Loved his drive back when he was an Esk.

Well said Mikey, always loved watching "Sole-Man" in the GnG.

That is such a great attitude for him to have...always a class act!!

To me it was never about what I accomplished on the football field, it was about the way I played the game.

always an alouette as well. his last career game had to be the unfortunate loss in the 1999 east final. real heartbreaker.

I have a friend that has a severe case of ALS. The rates that it hits a person are all different. My friend went from walking to being in a wheelchair in less than a year. I don't think he will be around much longer.

                      I wish Soles well.

Soles was a great teammate. A brilliant football player and an even better man. I've known about this for awhile but figured he was going to do battle with this thing with quiet dignity just like he's done with everything else in his life.

I remember back in '91 when Soles ran downfield and he took on the wedge on kickoff. Soles broke his jaw and then left the game to get it wired shut. The very next week Soles was back out there running downfield blowing up the wedge with a wired jaw.

                          That's tough.

I do not know if this post is active or not, but i have come across it. Mike Soles was one of my fathers best friends growing up. he attended every football game he played. he was even there when he hoisted the grey cup. although mike is dying. i do se him from time to time. he is now paralyzed in both close to both arms and has very little speech. but he always stays positive about things. if anyone has any further questions about mike feel free to ask.

                              Wow.

This is when you remember that football players are actual people. They're not the invincible machines of celebrity that we sports fans make them out to be.

I remember sitting by Oscar Kruger's bedside in the last month or so that I got to connect with him, and I'll confess that my first thought was: "Wow! I'm with one of the super-Eskimos who's on the Wall!" Then I realized that football was the least important thing at the moment. What really mattered was that this was a human being whose health was declining, and who needed a friend to be with as he lay there in the hospital bed.

                              Take care, Mr. Soles.
Keep an open mind, and you never know who might walk in...

                              RIP Pizmo
