Looking at this roster, it's pretty solid from top to bottom. D is championship caliber, STs are one of the best in the league (Lawrence will find his game back sooner than later), Oline looks good with the addition of MOD and SR, receiving core is solid now that everyone's healthy, and Reilly isn't going to have a repeat of Saturday's performance any time soon. The one piece of this puzzle that's missing is a dependable RB. I like Bell, he's had his moments but over all, he's not consistent enough and hasn't been durable enough thus far. His pass pro is coming along but it's not there yet. Then you have Simpson who is a guy that looks like he may not have much left in the tank at this point and a couple of new guys in Shavers and Morris that haven't seen the field yet despite having been here for close to a month while our running backs have continued to struggle. Even if those guys turn out to be decent they're still bound to go through some growing pains which is not what you want when you're a serious contender making a push for the Grey Cup.

What we need is a hard nosed, experienced back to solidify this team. I don't know if that guy is sitting around out there right now so we might be looking at trying to work a trade. I'd be calling Kyle Walters again and asking what it would take to pry Cameron Marshall out of the Peg. Probably never gonna happen but rumor is that Marcel prefers the skat back types like Cotton and Walker. A player like Marshall is exactly what we need to put the finishing touches on this roster.

I agree we could use a between the tackles runner on the team to complement Bell, but think the problems with the running game aren't on Bell's head as there have been few holes created by the O'line recently. It appears EH agrees as most of his recent acquisitions have been O'linemen.

Strengths Weaknesses
STRENGTHS: Sturdy, compact build with proportionate bulk throughout his frame. Balanced with a low center of gravity, keeping his feet through contact. Patient but doesn't shy from contact, lowering his pads, following blocks and keeping his legs pumping. Quickly reads his blocks and adjusts with decisive, smooth lateral cuts. Good feet and feel at the line of scrimmage to find the hole and get north-south. Fluid lower body with loose hips. Runs determined and always falling forward with his finishing toughness. Good hands and focus to spear the ball away from his body Had 77 career catches at UAB. Willing blocker and gives up his body in pass protection with strong field awareness to pick up extra blitzers. Consistent production the past two years, leading the team in rushing both seasons.

WEAKNESSES: Only average power and won't run over defenders. Looks maxed out physically and won't be able to get too much bigger. Only average speed with limited explosive qualities. More of a one-speed runner and isn't a home run threat. Slowed by contact and needs a few moments to collect himself and get back to full speed. Too often goes down at first contact and won't break a lot of tackles. Pass blocking technique needs an overhaul. Needs to be more aware as a pass catcher to sit in open zones or recognize pressure and get his head turned for the quick dump off. Shared the backfield duties (44.2% of the team's carries in 2013) and appeared to wear down late in games.--Dane Brugler

A two-star RB recruit, Reaves chose UAB over Vanderbilt out of high school, deciding to stay close to home. He was part of a heavy RB-by-committee backfield as a true freshman in 2011 and emerged as the starter in 2012, recording career-bests with 215 carries for 1,037 yards and 13 scores (and 41 catches). Reaves produced similar numbers in 2013 and decided to leave school early for the NFL leaves UAB with 2,337 career rushing yards, third-best in school history. He is solidly-built and packs a punch at the point of attack with good vision and patience to allow blocks to develop, quickly getting through the line of scrimmage. Reaves was able to be productive despite sharing the workload with little talent around him. He lacks elite speed or explosive qualities, but he's tough, balanced and has proven to be an every-down back.

STRENGTHS: Perkins has broad shoulders, thick thighs and quick feet, which allow him to spurt through creases and run through arm tackles. Possesses intriguing acceleration. Some of his most impressive runs, are due to an ability to stop and start, allow pursuing defenders to slip right on by him. Perkins has good vision and likes to cut-back, making him a threat even when defenders appear to have him bottled up. He isn't asked to do much as a receiver, typically slipping out in the flats, but when given the opportunity, has shown good hands and explosion up field after the catch.

WEAKNESSES: Perhaps not as fast as his estimated 40-yard dash time would indicate, as he'll appear to lose steam on longer runs, and has been run down from behind at times. Perkins will lower a shoulder into an oncoming defender when in pass protection but ultimately, his lack of size limits his effectiveness in this area.

COMPARES TO: Vick Ballard, RB, Indianapolis Colts - Perkins is similar in many ways to his former teammate, Vick Ballard, now running with the Indianapolis Colts. Like Ballard, Perkins does not possess special traits but is a determined, well-rounded player who can contribute at the next level. He is certainly smaller than the 5-10, 220-pound Ballard, but is faster and more agile in space.

How would you know? We never see him unless he's in to block for the import running back. Ok, so I exaggerate, but only a little. I don't know what it is with our offensive coordinators, but they don't seem to know how to use a good Canadian running back like CMC, or Bertrand before him, for that matter.

I agree with Gungadin - that the problem with our running game has less to do with the talent and skillset of our backs, and more to do with the OL and scheme. With Bell, Simpson and K-Law, I don't see us making trades to bring someone else in, especially when we haven't jumped at guys like Chevon Walker or Nic Grigsby (who is still on Ham's PR). Simpson has under-rated inside ability I think, and it's been a long time since I have seen a back with the desire and determination of Bell.

I am all for having depth and looking for upgrades, but I don't believe that someone else is going to magically find holes that our current backs don't see. Getting better, and healthier, on the OL, returning to more of a run threat at QB, and scheming more effectively is how I expect us to address the run game.
