    Braces

Hi guys, I'm putting this in the Esks forum b/c it involves Ed Hervey but to the moderators please feel free to move it.

Earlier this week Ed Hervey said he would be playing with a brace. Now I am no football player, I love playing with my buddies but all of my football injuries consist of a fractured finger here and there. But I figure there are a lot of players former and present on this site as well as those who played junior, highschool, university ball, etc. that can answer my questions.

So my questions are: Just how much mobility will Hervey lose by having to wear a brace?

How protective are they? Will he be able to take direct hits? I figure it'll probably give him some pain but will it protect him for the most part?

I like many of you on these boards am very excited to have Ed back so I just hope that he feels comfortable out there and burns the Ti-Cats young secondary every chance he gets

    Re: Braces

Well, after having my left knee rebuilt from basketball and spending a full year learning to walk again... I'd say Ed outta take it slow and not rush back(like I did...STUPID!!). The brace gives the joint some dgree of stability but if he twists on a route, a tackle, or get his feet taken out from under him he could reinjure it and perhaps end his career. The upside is the medical science/rehab is so much better now than when I hurt mine that perhaps we could have Ed at 90-95% for the last couple of games of the regular season. We would definitely want him for the playoffs as he has shown that he brings his A-game.
Going back too early just because you have the will/drive to play can be a recipe for disaster!

He should be fine, these new braces are awesome. But theres always that chance you can get injured.

While no expert, my understanding is that once his knee is medicaly cleared, the brace is there to prevent any motion caused by weakness in the joint along with contact causing undue motion. I believe the only real limitations will be the mental hurdle of the brace. With a guy like Ed, there will probably be a small limitaion in full range of motion, meaning that big top gear of his might have a lower ration.

My son is recovering from knee surgery and has just been fitted with a brace. He had his first soccer practise last week and was surprised at the mobility he had with it. The dr said that the brace was mostly for extra support while the muscle came back and he shouldn't have any limitations in playing.

              Hi,

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I must admit that while i am excited to have Ed back, i would be very cautious about this as well because I don't want Ed to get hurt again. Now not to belittle the TiCats but I feel that if we can beat the Lions without Hervey then we should be able to do the same vs the TiCats. Ed probably would want a few games to get back into shape, etc but i don't think it would be a bad thing if he waited till Toronto next week.

Currently, I am recovering from reconstructive surgery (ACL replaced) but have had a brace for the past six years for playing sports. When I have it on (eg. World Masters Games), it did keep my knee from doing things that it is not supposed to do, but in the same breath, it is not 'bionic' . The same thing should go for Hervey (although his was an MCL) in that he should not be able to injure it again just running and getting tackled. If he were to get hit again like Belli hit him, that brace will not protect him

To me it was never about what I accomplished on the football field, it was about the way I played the game.
