Excuse my language but are they RETARDED? Why on earth would a player report getting a car or anything under the table? What, so the league can tell them to give it back.
Even with the new higher cap, there are still only going to be a handful of players on each team making high salaries so to speak. The rest are going to be hovering around the league minimum. Im sure if some player rats on his team, he will soon find himself "replaced" for football reasons of course.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

I think there'd be a few people repeating Painless' lines from MASH to the rats

Painless: [lining up during football game] All right, Bub, your f***in' head is coming right off.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

A no-brainer. Do the 'right thing' (???) or be loyal to your team mates. One thing, though. With the probability of most teams' desire (and ability) to spend beyond the cap without reprisal as the article suggests, it looks like we'll have to endure more tripe from other team fans, saying how we may be 'buying' another cup. Nothing new, there. Oh well, it's great to be the kings of the castle...

                Re: Whistle blowers...

I dunno if a whistle blower statute is going to have any effect or not... but I don't see any harm in having one. Whistle blower laws are becoming commonplace these days, especially with so many corporate corruption scandals going on. I suspect that this mechanism is a concession that the lower-budget teams insisted upon to rein in the richer teams they suspect of subterfuge. My first instinct is that it would be more likely that players would bring up the issue at contract negotiation time, where they have firsthand knowledge that a teammate is getting preferential treatment... or especially if he witnesses players on other teams getting perks that he isn't.

I don't forsee one veteran ratting out another veteran, but it's feasible that a guy who's been cut and disgruntled might figure he's got nothing to lose. Teams might at least be wary of getting too blatant about doling out favours to a privileged few, knowing that it could come back and cost them.

                    Re: Whistle blowers...

The whistle blowing may only result when a player is released from a team and is bitter about it, should he have something on the side with them.

As for whistle blowers knowing something about a star players contract, they may have a TIPS line set up which the players could direct the auditors to look into.

Bottomline, this is going to be a rare case if ever scenario.

                        Whistle blowers, IMO, will be:

                        1. People released / spurned by a particular team who are looking to enact some revenge on their former team.

                        or

                        2. Players who are aware of a side deal but don't themselves benefit from it. For example, if Player A attempts to get a side deal (say, free rent) and doesn't get it...but finds out later that Player B did, then Player A may whistle blow.

But even if he was a disgruntled player and squealed on his old team would any other team really want him either?

Henry Burris may be looking for some extra cash. What a better way to create turmoil within the opposition than to offer up that information on your opponent with a big game on the horizon.
