One session today. I sat with Esklover and Diesel for most of the practice. The big...nay not just big but SHOCKING news from todays practice. Late in the offense vs defense drills the Esks ran a screen pass....an honest to goodness legit screen pass. Diesel and I after a few moments of stunned silence looked at each other and said, 'Did we just see what we thought we saw?' I was about to berate the O-line for letting the D-line in so easily when they tossed a real screen pass to McClendon, who of course was wide open and ran for what would have been a huge gain. And to think, Fishman was not there to see it.
Steven Jyles was not at camp today. When a couple of fellow fans ask Dwayne Mandrusiak where he was Mandrusiak replied. "We cut him." which of course was a joke. He was away for some personal reasons, Diesel felt it could possibly be a visa thing perhaps.
Qb's threw the ball fairly well except for a couple of ducks on long plays. Khari reverted to being a sack waiting to happen. In some of the QB/recevier drills he gets ride of the ball smartly and decisively at times. When he is in there in a scrimmage sitaution though he holds onto the ball forever, pumping and pumping.
In a continuing trend the O-line looked good run blocking in drills vs defense line and backers but not so good pass blocking. At times they do a decent job but at times guys are coming in free and clear.
Tucker was excellent today on long and short passes. On one long pass that floated up short he really slowed for a second to get the DB to slow up then he made the quick little burst to get to the ball. Most other receivers looked okay with the Vets looking best in my eyes. None of the new receivers have really stood out as making a big impression to me this year.
Both Fleming and Williams were just hammering the punts today. As Diesle pointed out, bad punting conditions, damp, humid and just poor punting conditions and yet both these guys had the return guys turning to chase beautiful high deep spirals. The punters (especially Fleming) were both punting to the sidelines effectively as well.
It is going to be very painful to have to cut some of the guys we will cut on defense. Roosevelt Williamns and Jonte Buhl continue to look very impressive and yet Frank and other vets like Brady and Garrett still look really good. Same thing on the D-line we are overloaded with talent there. Linebacking is more of a question mark as Gass is still not here and with Marsh out Mobley is the only established guy there. Myles was playing in Marshes spot and Winn was playing MLB on the 1st team if my memory serves me.
A couple of coach hollerfests, Keply was very perturbed at the defense not identifying and communicating an underneath pattern that was run against them. He berated the players on the field and then took a turn at the guys on the sidelines. Maciocia also blasted the team a couple times for offensive breakdowns.
Overall a pretty good practice considering how cold and damp it was.
