Lefsrud stays planted on the farm

    Monday, July 17, 2006 - 12:00PM

Guard, Esks fail to reach deal

    By Vicki Hall,
    Edmonton Journal

EDMONTON - Negotiations between guard Kevin Lefsrud and the Edmonton Eskimos have broken down.

After a flicker of hope a few weeks ago, there appears to be no hope the two sides will reach an agreement before the end of the 2006 season.

Lefsrud, 29, has essentially informed the Eskimos that he's through with football -- at least for now.

"He's done," said head coach Danny Maciocia. "He's not playing anymore. It's a done deal. It's over."

Lefsrud, however, is keeping the barn door open should the Eskimos eventually decide to offer him more cash.

"Right now, I'm on the farm," he said on Sunday. "That's where I'm making my living. There's always ways of changing people's minds, but as of right now, my mind is not changed.

"If an offer is made to me that I can't refuse, I'll come back.

"We're very busy," said Lefsrud, who farms near Viking, about 100 kilometres east of Edmonton. "We've got some peas turning pretty quickly here. By the beginning of August, we'll be harvesting."

The Eskimos, meanwhile, are happy with their current crop of offensive linemen, Maciocia said. Joe McGrath, Dan Comiskey, Tim Bakker, Glen Carson and Patrick Kabongo won the battle on the line of scrimmage last week in a 27-20 win over the B.C. Lions.

The big boys face a massive task in protecting Ricky Ray this week against the explosive Winnipeg front seven. Ron Warner leads the team with four sacks, and he's

expected to return from an injury in time for the Thursday night clash at Commonwealth Stadium.

    Blue Bombers hurting these days

Speaking of injuries, the Blue Bombers are a hurting unit on the offensive line.

At one point, they played with two defensive linemen on that side of the ball in a 44-16 loss Saturday to the Montreal Alouettes.

Offensive tackle Dan Goodspeed (knee) and guard Matt Sheridan (groin) are out indefinitely. Offensive lineman Aaron Fiacconi (knee) is also doubtful for Thursday's game.

Thankfully, for Winnipeg, offensive lineman Mike Abou-Mechrek is expected to be back from an injury, but that still leaves two gaping holes on the line.

"It's pretty bad," said Rob Brown, a defensive tackle for Edmonton. "They're pretty beat up. Oh well. It's their problem. It's something they'll deal with.

"We'll see on Thursday who they have."

    COATES SENT PACKING

The Eskimos have released defensive end Sherrod Coates. The Western Kentucky product played in four games for the Esks. He recorded three defensive tackles, two special teams tackles and two knockdowns.

His job was in jeopardy the moment the Esks re-signed rush end Joe Montford.

"He became expendable," Maciocia said. "And we did what we had to do."

SHORT YARDAGE -- Linebacker A.J. Gass (hamstring) and receiver Derrell (Mookie) Mitchell (hamstring) sat out of practice on Sunday. Both are listed as questionable for Thursday.

How far apart could they have possibly been?

I hope the Esks didn't go all cheap-ass on his ass.

At least our O-Line has performed above expectations so far. I have to give them credit.

Our Oline has played much better than most people's expectations (as esk fans) and most people's hopes ( hater-ators). There's no need at this point to pony up huge dough unless we ran into injury issues.

Goodbye, enjoy farming, please not even one mention of Lefsrud for the rest of the year unless it is an announcement that he is coming back for sure and a contract is signed. As far as I know he was not a free agent and already had a contract, the Esks against their normal routine have made an offer to renegotiate. Goodbye and good luck.

The guy is only 29 and is trying to come back to the team. The fact that this is still dragging on points at some sort of barrier.

The barrier is that he had a valid contract and now wants a large raise, screw em, stay home, we'll live one way or the other.

I missed that, I didn't realize he was still under contract. I thought he was negotiating a new one.

I'm pretty sure Kevin enjoys working on the farm. His dad is getting too old to keep up their seed farm by Viking so basically to keep him playing football, he would need a VERY large incentive ($$). Frankly, I can respect a guy for having that dedication to his family and making a tough decision. I don't think the Esks need to put any more pressure on him to come back. Our o-line is playing comfortably well, and Kevin is comfortably farming.

                Life is good.

Nothing against the man and his past contributions to the team, but the Esks will indeed move on and develop an oline that is starting to get it together. Good luck to him and his family; can't see any further saga here unless things on the line go horribly wrong and Bomber-like injuries take a toll.

AAAAYYYEEE Captain... no need to bring him back off the farm. The o-line hasn't been nearly as bad as I expected them to be... regrettably, the coaching has!!

SOunds like the guy wants the Esks to back the brinks truck up for him. If he is happy shelling peas, let him shell peas. The last thing the Esks want is a guy to play only because the offer was just too good to pass up. That doesnt sound like dedication to me.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

I see Lefrud's side. He has a business that pays him a good buck to work hard but not physically beat himself up. In order to come back and start tearing up his body again he has his price and he's sticking to it. The esks right now are in decent shape on the oline so they don't have to shell out more than their set price. Unless circumstances change (re: injury) both sides don't have to budge.
