After cooling down to a slow boil.....

Have to say, I'm still p.o'ed over what I saw on friday on many levels. I've pretty much stayed away from here for a few days while at the races because I needed to not think about that game for a while. Time to break some thoughts down:

Reggie Durden - Weakest link in the secondary, proven by the fact we had to move him out of position and he still get's beat and is forced to take penalties. I'd like to see what Roosevelt Williams can do as he is a much larger DB and matches up better size wise than the receivers Durden has been matched up against. I'm also not a fan of how RD has had to be restrained by his teammates on occasion for excessive yapping when IMO he should be picking up his jock off the turf and focusing on making plays.

Our strong side blitz was getting ZERO pressure to the QB. Weather it was the half back or Winn, they got no penetration to Glenn and in turn gave the bombers the nice vacated hole in the secondary that the bombers threw to on the hot route several times for good gains. Found myself very frustrated at the overal lack of pressure on Glenn and there was no excuse for that.

Why did it take us until mid way thru the third quarter to discover Troy Davis?

Tucker shovel pass on the 1 yd line made little sense to me. We seem to make the error of trying to out think our opponents on offence rather than trying to outplay them. We force Swerve to try and jitterbug around defenders on hitch passes instead of turning him loose, we shovel to Tucker in the box rather than lining him up against the secondary and play to his strength of beating guys and out leaping defenders. IMO if you are going to run that shovel play, Woodcock is better suited as a speedster with a lower center of gravity who can get to the corner.

The receiving core did not do a good enough job in coming back to the football to give Ray a target when he was getting flushed out with pressure. Too many times I didn't see receivers looking back to see that the play called was a bust. Also too many lapses of concentration with easy balls being dropped ( Swerve, Woodcock) Get well soon Mookie. Also did anyone tell RR that Nowacki was playing? If they had he might have seen him open a time or two.

We average 7.4 points in first half's this season???????? WTF??????? Danny, you ball control offence works much better when we have a lead, as it sucks arse to start the game. We seem to gain little to no momentum in the first half of any game and it's not until half time do we make changes.

Dline needs to seriously step up it's game. While the front 7 did a nice job taking Chuck Bob out of the game by the second half, Glenn's jersey was way to clean by the end of the game.

Oline probably had it's poorest game of the year, but they were up against the best Dline. Still a work in progress here but they will continue to get better.

Discipline issues still costing us but I couldn't believe the overal ineptetude of the officiating. Anyone else notice the missed no yards call against the bombers when TNT took a knee in the first half???? WTF? Bad PI call on Durden, some bad cals on the bombers as well. Just a sloppy, poorly called game by the zebras altogether.

Under the file: Bear Droppings. How incredibly stupid was our bear mascot when for several moments he was using the D - Fence signs when OUR FRIGGEN OFFENCE WAS ON THE FIELD DEEP IN OUR END!?!?!?! He had to be told by a fan that we had the ball. MORON!

Last play - Why they didn't take a timeout when it sure looked like there was a lot of confusion both on the field and the sidelines was beyond me. Frank should have focused on making the tackle instead of playing the ball. Brutal, brutal effort all around and inexcuseable.

This team looks disjointed on both sides of the ball right now. Too many mental errors and a little too much "me" instead of "we" meaning players trying to make individual efforts rather than focusing on playing well as a team.

All that said we are still one game out of first and have time to get the ship sailing in the right direction.

It has a time and place but as I mentioned to Gregor and Stauffer, we seem to force our talent to play a certain offence rather than tailor our offence around the talent we have. The ball controll offence is effective when you are up and you need to grind out the clock.

          Furious Diesel!!!

Any holes in the drywall, man?

Great post, but I'll latch on to your point about Davis. I brought this up on Friday, and I really think that the current regime has a serious problem when it comes to utilizing RB's. Since Pringle left, the backfield has had no impact, and not because of lack of talent. 100 yard TD's be damned, the Esks put themselves in the spot they were in because of sloppy playcalling and this ridiculous lack of killer instinct.

On another note, look on the bright side. That post describes how I feel about my team most of the time.

Excellent analysis as usual, I was wondering where you had got to.

Reggie Durden - This guy has got to go, at least put him in the nickel or dime, he's really hurting us in all phases, he is an atrocious tackler.

Tucker shovel pass on the 1 yd line made little sense.

Crazy play, after doing the predictable run up the gut play just a simple boot leg or go of tackle would have been better. Not to mention on that play that Tucker (our best player) just got creamed, can you imagine him being out for any length of time for that play?...braindead.

The receiving core did not do a good enough job in coming back to the football to give Ray

Agreed, there was a number of times Ray was sprinting out for his life and none of the WR seemed to realize this.

We average 7.4 points in first half's this season???????? WTF???????
We need to score early and get a lead, when we get a 10 point or more lead we can run the ball and our ball control offense becomes very effective (see the BC game)

Dline needs to seriously step up it's game.

Don;t know why Sommersell was not starting on defense, our pass rush has been feeble this year.

Anyone else notice the missed no yards call against the bombers when TNT took a knee in the first half???? WTF?

I was screaming at the ref for that, people around me were looking at me funny.

MORON!

I was upset at that also, in addition, Chris Sheetszzz, When we are playing like pure crap in a close game I really don't feel like doing the wave.

Last play - Why they didn't take a timeout when it sure looked like there was a lot of confusion both on the field and the sidelines was beyond me. Frank should have focused on making the tackle instead of playing the ball. Brutal, brutal effort all around and inexcuseable.

I was shocked it was Frank who missed that tackle as he is by far our best tackler in the secondary

All that said we are still one game out of first and have time to get the ship sailing in the right direction.

Yup, like last year as long as we make the playoffs let everyone count us out. At least we have tried going deep much more often lately.

As I've said before the big play > than ball control offense in the CFL. Look at Toronto vs Sask, as usual Trana didn't do a hell of alot, except a punt return td, a huge 90+ yard play and another bomb for a td. Also look at Winnipeg, big plays. If the Esks can coax one or two big plays a game our ball control will look alot better.

Re: After cooling down to a slow boil.....

Some ecellent posts guys as we are all "simmering" about the same right now!!! Some thoughts on your thoughts:

Secondary - Bring back Brady... you brought back Montford. We are not playing physical and that strip late in the fourth was the first time we have made an effort to go after the ball all year!! What has happened to the aggressive in your face pressure defence..... I'll tell you what has happened...RICK CAMPBELL!!!

Pass Rush - well that's easy.... we don't have one!!

Play Calling - that @%$%&%#@@% [mod edit] has got to be the worst most non-imaginative play caller in the league. As pointed out the shovel pass to JT was stupid as was running Bertrand up the gut as usual. This [mod edit]swell fellow[/mod edit] should know that other teams watch tape on us too and right now he is making their jobs very easy!

QB - big numbers mean squat if you don't win. Roll Ray out and move the pocket, try quick hit passes, faster screen plays, and take pressure off the oline. Ray needs to step up and "voice" some leadership.... miss you Jason Maas!

Running game - Aw gawd.... I could go on and on.... but you guys have pretty much covered it. I will say that I agree the Esks are their own worst enemy here, the talent is there but the coach is to damn stupid to capitalize on it and create a balanced offence.

Oline - I slammed them something fierce in training camp and I gotta eat crow..... they are the only bright spot right now and have played fairly well under dire circumstances.

Special Teams - TNT needs to hit the hole North/South and hit it fast. I realize the neccessity of having to wait for your blocking to form up but undue hesitation on his part is killing our return game!! And yes Fish.... why the hell no-yards was not called is beyond me, the ref was standing RIGHT THERE!!!!

Recievers - Somebody needs to light a fire and put attitude back into these guys..... bigs catches don't always do it! One of the vets needs to take charge of these guys and develop a "no prisoners" mentality!!

AND FINALLY THE KEY TO OUR FAILURE/SUCCESS THIS SEASON....... can anyone remember or create stats on the number of penalties we have taken??? Over 300 yards in the last two games..... no **** you won't win a ball game that way! Most of it has been execution and focus and some has been coaching. Coach 'Choke" needs to institue a fine policy or some other form of disciplinary measures to correct this. Also....... the officiating has sucked big time. total lack of consistency in calls and we always seem to be the ones getting caught.... look and call it both ways and I won't have a problem ya morons(Steen and Ireland seem to really stick it to us).

The solution has several parts starting with some player changes. Then we MUST have a change in the defensive coach spot along with a change in philosophy. Look what Greg Marshall has done in coming to the Bombers...... PRECISELY MY POINT!!!!
Lastly, we needs to clean up our game and stop making us our opposition rather than the team we are playing against!!!

Prediction for Als game..... ALS by 20!!!!!

No kidding . I was thinking bootleg and/or QB option every time we were inside the 5...yet we never run it. Every other team does, and it tends to work ...take some notes, there, coaches.

Now that you mention it, yes ...I was happy about the no yds, but couldn't figure out why things lined up the way they did after that .

What kind of a question is that?

                    @ CGY: 11-91
                    vs CGY: 8-65
                    @ WPG: 10-49
                    vs BC: 26-227
                    vs WPG: 16-186

                    Total: 68-618
                    (Opponent: 58-468)

Astonishingly, we're only 5th worst in flags against (CGY, MTL, HAM, WPG all have 70+)...but we're 2nd worst in yds (only WPG has more, at 735, and they've played one more game).

Over 400 yards in penalties the last two games, I'd say that's worth 10 points per game. We should have smoked BC and beat the Bombers.

Love Ron Lancaster (senior) or not, but didn't he make it clear that when he was head coach of the Esks that 110 yards in penalties is essentially a free touchdown for the opposition?
