What you see is what you'll get

    'Not much out there'
There's nothing enticing on Lowe's radar
    By TERRY JONES, EDMONTON SUN

Edmonton Oilers General Manager Kevin Lowe. (David Bloom/Sun file)
    BOSTON -- Get somebody!

You'd think with a dozen days to go to the trade deadline the relationship between coach and general manager might be getting a little strained.

Craig MacTavish still doesn't have his puck moving defenceman. And without Jarret Stoll, Fernando Pisani and Ethan Moreau, he's an entire line down as the Edmonton Oilers have six games to go on the seven-game make-or-break road trip which continues in Buffalo tonight.

But the coach, who took his team to practise here while waiting out the weather prior to flying to Buffalo later in the day, says he's not screaming at Kevin Lowe to get him help and get it now.

"The relationship doesn't change," insists MacTavish. "You are always trying to do the right deal for the organization on the cycle that you're in."

    WHAT'S THE DEAL?

And right now, despite the Oilers' struggles to get back into a playoff position, MacTavish isn't making a big deal about Lowe not doing a deal.

"There's not much out there that's enticing in any way, shape or form," he said.

"It's not like we wouldn't like to help ourselves. You have to do a deal that makes sense. You have to do the right deal, regardless, short term or long term."

GM Kevin Lowe, stranded in Hartford yesterday in an attempt to watch Oilers farm hands play in a weathered-out game in Springfield, Mass., says that it's at times like this a GM really appreciates having a coach like MacTavish.

"That's one of the under-appreciated sides of Mac. More than most coaches, he's in it long term and he sees it long term.

"I don't know many coaches around who know contracts and the value of players on the open market."

Lowe says he hates to deliver the message to Oilers fans that there's nothing enticing out there.

"I don't want to be so doomsday to our fans. But the truth is we don't have a rabbit to pull out of the hat.

"When you say, 'Get somebody!', we're like that sometimes ourselves. And if we could do something right now to shake up and see what happens that made any sense, we'd probably do it.

"At the same time there are so many trade rumours on TSN and Sportsnet that are just TV guys throwing stuff at the wall with maybe 1% basis, it drives you crazy. It's like trying to plug the Hoover Dam. I've given up. It really affects some players. At a time like this when you really need them, they're playing uptight."

With all the talk about getting some kind of a deal done, MacTavish says, there's one thing here that he can't get past with his hockey team.

"With what we have here right now should be good enough," he said.

    "We're capable.

"It's been extremely frustrating the last couple of months. We're good enough. We're not playing terrible.

"We play to get ourselves an opportunity, we win a couple, we give ourselves a chance to get on a run. Then we haven't been good enough to win that one hockey game."

    BACK WHERE THEY WERE

The Oilers won two straight going into Tuesday's tilt here with the Boston Bruins. They'd won five of the previous seven.

But the losses in there against Calgary, Vancouver and now Boston have all put them back where they were.

"The furthest ahead I'm looking is the Minnesota game at the end of this road trip," said MacTavish.

"We want to put ourselves in a position to make that game as meaningful as possible.

"That just got more difficult by losing the first game of the road trip."

Now we have to salvage from the five games we have left between now and the Minnesota game and go in there and put the pressure on them and this time finally take advantage of it.

"Minnesota is the team we have the most opportunity against," MacTavish said of the fact that the Oilers have five of their last 19 games against the Wild.

"Time is running out obviously. We have to get in position with our team game to be good enough down the stretch or our season expires."

That pretty much sums it all up.

You don't think he's being coy?

In Calgary Sutter always says "I'm done" or something along those lines, then BAM! a move is made.

I just don't see why Lowe would bother tipping his hat to the media.

No, the only people making trades at the moment are the dumb ones. The rental player for a draft pick days are over. Calgary gave up some future for Stuart.

Not really - they traded a #5/6 D-man making 1.4 million - they have 2 #5/6 D-men ready to replace him in Giordano and Regehr - both on entry-level contracts; savings of 1 million.

Kobasew has already been outscored by David Moss on the Flames - who is also on his entry-level contract - further savings, and actually an INCREASE in productivity.

How did they give up their future again?

They gave up team character, just like they did the year following the Stanley Cup run.

                Kobasew is injured.

But still, only the dumb one's are doing trades for rental players, right? Those days are over, right?

Oilers did it and made the Finals.

I'm talking about this season. Teams have seen the value of a rental player so they are no longer going to be cheap. Thus the reason for the lack of trades this year.

I know Lowe doesn't want to be raked, but he needs to do something to shake this team up. Maybe the asking price for some of the guys are a bit too high, but the ship is sinking fast.
Lets say they try to get a guy like Pikanen and Philly is asking for a Torres and a top prospect. The thing I would ask myself as KLowe is, do we have anybody of Pikanen's caliber in our system? The answer is no.
Do the Oilers have any defenceman that is going to step up next year and be the answer that they don't have this year? The answer is no again.
Are we realistically going to find the answer to our problem this offseason? Realistically, we won't?
So in reality, how much of a price is too high?
Roli only has so many years left. Our D is clearly the major problem with this team. Yes the offence has not been as potent as everyone thought it would. But alot of that can be attributed to our D sucking. Forwards have to play back because our D sucks. Our PP is brutal because there is no D to quarterback it.
I know you don't want to sell the farm, but this season is pretty much gone and next season doesn't exactly look promising at this point either.

Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

Agreed.... or is it just because Lowe does not want to spend the money, or let me rephrase that, the EIG does not want to spend the money. Or maybe there are still some teams that do not realize that they do not have a chance of making the playoffs and do not want to do anything at all yet until the 27th, then it might be too late for Edmonton, but I am still hoping that they win at least 4 games on this trip which is do able... even if they lose to buffalo tonight, I still think that they can beat Toronto, Ottawa, Columbus and Minnesota and for some strange reason, they play well against better teams, so they might have a possiblility of beating buffalo and detroit, but who knows.

The way they need to look at it is Torres will demand in the 2mill range easily. Then you take Sykora's 3mill off the books. That's 5 mill to use. Let's say it takes you max 4 mill for the d-man, that leaves 1 mill to give to Smyth, which puts him in the 5 mill per year area which is where he wants to be.

2 million is an over payment for Torres with the year he is having, and I do not know if I would give Smyth 5 million considering Doan only got 4.6 million, but then again, maybe Lowe is just saying this to lessen the pressure on the team, as he said in the article they are playing tight, so it might just be he said this to lessen the pressure, but who knows, I remember last year when Lowe said that there was not a deal for a goaltender to be made and the price was too high and he got Roloson, so who knows what is BS and what is not, I think he just said this to lessen the pressure off the team so they play better without having to worry about who is going to be traded, that is my thought, but then again, I am not Kevin Lowe, and he may be right.
