Re: Ryan Smyth deal not done - traded to NYI

Well, Ryan said he wasn't going to take the home team discount. Looks like KLowe wasn't going to pay the fan fav premium. Both parties seem to have drawn a line in the sand. It's going to be a interesting off season.

Sad to see Smytty get traded.

But, I can see KLowes side of this as well. $5-$6 mill per year for a player who isn't even in the top 50 in points is too much.

The Smyth camp HAD to of bumped up the amount of the contract. Had to of!!

Give the young guys more ice time, plain and simple.
        Long live the B.O.N.E.

This gives MacT's lovechild, Toby Peterson, more ice time, plain and simple.

Think about what Smyth brings. 30 goals, one of the 5 best LW in the NHL, wins most of the battles on the boards, terrific on the cycle, clutch.....

Uh, look at at this way.

If what you say is true, then Ryan Smyth turned down a deal that was LESS THAN A MEASLY 5% less than what he wanted.

What kind of team player is that?

I wonder if we will have a ceremony for Smyth when he retires. I doubt it for a long time unless he comes back to play here which I give a 2 percent chance.

If he stay his whole career here, (excluding 20-odd games on the island) wears the 'C' and wins a Cup at some point I wouldn't mind it.

                      Any less than Al Hamilton?

Al Hamilton was at one point being compared to Orr before he almost lost his eye. Hammy's contribution had more to do with this team prior to it making the NHL, than after that

Talk on Sportsnet in the morning was Smyth was looking for around $5 million and Lowe was offering $4.3M. No mention was made of term. If this was true then neither side seemed to be terribly out to lunch in their demands. Dreger asked Kypreos what's the difference between $4.3M & $5.0M if Smyth gets to stay at home in Alberta given he's probably well set up for the rest of his life. Kypreos answered simply "$700 thousand dollars". That amounts to a couple million over 3 years.

One thing that should be remembered is that Smyth is now 31. This is his first crack at unrestricted free agency. He'd likely be looking for the security of a 3 or 4 year deal. Teams seem to prefer such deals because the player is usually willing to accept a little less for the security of the longer term. What this all boils down to is Smyth's next contract is likely his last crack at the real big bucks. Call it greedy if you want but he owes it to himself and his family to leverage the best offer he can out of what will be a once-in-a-career opportunity. His agent is Don Meehan and Meehan doesn't make many mistakes on gauging what the market should bear. If Lowe wasn't prepared to pay market value then this is what happens.

Who knows maybe he will come back this summer......to Alberta......to play LW on Iginla's line in Calgary.

If they were only offering 4.3m then I suspect the EIG was holding the purse strings tight on Lowe.
