If the Oilers could have signed Smyth for 5.5 they should have. Period.
Over 5 years? No friggin way. He's a career 60 point, 30 goal guy. He's having a career year this year, do you really think he gets BETTER over the course of the deal? If anything I think he ends up like Peter Forsberg, playing 40 - 50 games a year because of the beating he takes. Salary Cap Management 101 says you DON'T sign aging players to big dollars over a long term.
One could make the argument he is. Name another player in the league that does the things he does night in and night out and is a beast in front of the net. I can't off the top of my head...
Agreed.
You don't pay $5.75M if you are looking SOLELY at his points-per-game.
But how much do you value the intangibles?
How much is getting hit in the face with a puck, spitting out 3 teeth, and getting sewn up to get back into the lineup THAT NIGHT worth to an organization?

In years 4 and 5 of that deal it becomes cheap. Believe me, the Oilers aren't going to ever sign a 40 goal scorer for less than $7 Million.
How does it become "cheap"? Chances are his production is way down in years 4 and 5, but we are stuck paying him 5.75 a year.
Chances are that guys who put up 60-70 points will go for much more than 5.5 at that point. Even if Smyth is a 20 goal 50 point man then, the pricetag will still be reasonable then. Salaries aren't going anywhere but up.
Again we trade today for the future. Still waiting for that future to come.
Disagree. We paid 18 games for 3 first rounders. If we couldn't get him signed by now, what the hell makes anyone think he was going to sign before July 1? If we kept him, tried to sign him by July, failed and got nothing, everyone here would crap themselves. We can't overpay a guy because he's "popular".
From what I can see the Smyth camp must of jacked up there c ontract demands to the 6mill range. I'm sorry but you can't pay that kind of money to him. I'm sure some dumb GM will give him that much. I've even herad about perhaps even as much as 7mill.
A lot of people go through life doing things badly. Racing is important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting." Michael Delaney AKA- Steve McQueen
Honestly this doesnt surprise me. Ryan has always been about the money... and I said it months and months ago he'd be traded - just because I think he is a greedy person.
He took home count discounts in the past supposedly so in his mind he did Oilers a favour.
If we were put on this earth to help others, what were the others put on earth for?

I doubt that very much. Smyth likely wanted 5.5, the Oilers weren't willing to go there. They likely offered 5.25 at the top. So for 250k we lose Smyth. It's ridiculous!! Think about what Smyth brings. 30 goals, one of the 5 best LW in the NHL, wins most of the battles on the boards, terrific on the cycle, clutch.....

No one knows for sure what he demanded against what he was offered. I am sure if the difference were small he would have signed. I am assuming it wasn't and that is the reason he was traded. If that is the case Lowe made the only move he could at the time. Actually if he had been more proactive it would not have come down to the last second and perhaps the Oilers would have gotten a better deal somewhere else.

depends on if that is what you want out of your franchise player though? There are lots of guys who play that style of game, they just aren't as effective as Smyth. Roberts used to play that game even better IMO, but age and constant pounding has limited him to altering his play, just as it eventually will to Smyth. However, Roberts was never paid or thought of as a franchise player on any team he played for.....
Before you insult a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you insult him, you'll be a mile away, and have his shoes.
