The face maybe, but not the franchise.

Again, two prospects and a first rounder now are better then nothing in July.

Smyth won't be back. And the Oilers suck at the draft table.

If that was the case then Smyth was gone regardless. Don't forget there was a pretty damn generous offer on the table that Smyth rejected.

He also said that the Oilers weren't going to get themselves a hometown discount for his services.

So obviously he was looking at the money and only the money, and frankly I think he was relying on fan sentimentality to force the Oilers hand into overpaying for him. So if you want to blame someone for screwing the Oilers out of having Smyth here right now, blame Smyth.
It's not like ha hasn't held out on a contract demand before. Now he can see what his market is....and at the end of the day if the Oilers have the highest contract on the table where do you think he'll go?

If someone else overpays for him now, that is their fault and Smyth's fault for not signing with the Oilers when a generous deal to stay here was there for him to sign.

They got 3 first round picks for him (effectively)........would you have preferred that the Oilers continue to make offer after offer until they have crippled the team by overpaying for him? or better yet, lose him straight out in free agency?

*Not to mention that because he stalled in signing so long, he limited Lowe's options at getting an auction going for a deal.

According to the guys on TSN, there was no Smyth auction...

Lowe may have dropped the ball on this one...

                    OMFG!!!

TSN is reporting that many GM's are saying "WTF? Smyth was available?".

If this was the case, this is a panic move of the utmost variety. Brutal, absolutely brutal.

He should have entertained more serious negotiations at least a week ago since Smyth was dragging his heels

In fairness to Lowe... it could be that having had discussions with Smyth about his plans for the summer, the only GM that Lowe thought he could SUCKER into trading big potential for someone Lowe had a decent shot at signing in July was Garth Snow.

If there's only one GM you think you can screw, why advertise Smyth around the league to smarter, more experienced GM's?

That's what I don't like. We should have gotten a roster player on top
