    GDT: Movin on up!

    ... well, hopefully.

A win tonight can move us into 25th (once again, out of the lottery... 24th was up for grabs, but it looks as though Chicago will beat Vancouver today).

The real important thing that win does though? It puts us 2 points behind CBJ with a game in hand. 2 points behind NYI. 1 Behind Washington. 1 behind Toronto with a game in hand.

    See the theme here?

21st place isn't out of the realm of possibility, and it starts with a win tonight. We've won 6 straight at home, CBJ is 7-3-1 in their last 11 on the road. Their lineup tonight:

Rick Nash - Mike Peca- Gilbert Brule
Jason Chimera - Manny Malhotra - Nikolai Zherdev
Andrew Murray - Dan Fritsche - Jared Boll
Fredrik Modin - David Vyborny - Derek MacKenzie

    Rostislav Klesla - Jan Hejda
    Ron Hainsey - Dick Tarnstrom
    Ole-Kristian Tollefsen - Kris Russell

    Pascal Leclaire

Oilers lineup last game, and thus what I expect for tonight

    Penner - Stoll - Hemsky
    Nilsson - Gagner - Cogliano
    Sanderson - Reasoner - Pisani
    Glencross - Brodziak - Stortini

    Staios - Pitkanen
    Gilbert - Greene
    Roy - Grebeshkov

    Garon

Our bottom 9 is better than Columbus' bottom 9. Rick Nash has finally become a player - he contributes at both ends of the rink, and is a true difference maker in the league. He's had some mediocre puck luck, but I fully expect everyone to call next year his breakout year... but it's already happening. He is officially a stud, and a top LW in the game. Our game plan absolutely has to revolve around Nash.

Looking at last game, it was the Hemsky and Pitkanen pairing that got the Kopitar matchup, and I fully expect the same tonight. Hemsky needs to be better than Nash tonight... hopefully the time off has helped his wrist. Garon needs a bounce back game as well, because he was craptacular last game. Those are the keys. The kids will take advantage of the bottom 9 in CBJ, and I expect that the $500k line will make an impact as well on CBJ's finesse defense.
"This year, we did what we were supposed to do. We fought as a team. We fought as a team. And the fact is, we gotta go back and go to work, to make sure we finish this next time. That's all we gotta do. This right here makes us stronger. Let's understand who we are as a team. Let's understand this right here makes us stronger." - Ray Lewis, January, 2012.

Is tonight the night the Oilers finally get past the elusive .500 mark?

This is a big game for the Oilers. I really think that a win tonight will pave the way for a successful finish to the season. (well, as successful as we can reasonably expect).

I expect a big effort from the Oilers today.
These pretzels are making me thirsty.

If I was any more confident, I'd put up a vbookie. But...seeing as their recent success is due to the lack of vbookie events, I may just leave it.

They have 30 wins in 65 games....an overtime loss is not the same thing as a tie. If they win tonight, they still won't be above .500.

1 out of 2 points works like a tie in my books.

Which is why the points system is gayer than a Calgary lockerroom.

Well.... right now there are FOUR teams in the NHL under .500.

So... it's really not an important number any more, at all. Figure it'll take 94 points most years to make the playoffs, so the number to talk about is about .560

Yet another reason why I hate taking the extra point you get for losing into consideration. If you add all the records of any sports league together, you should get .500, As many wins as there are losses.

Well, once you get that implemented, try to get the Jews and Palestinians to like each other.

If your name is Kyle Brodziak or Matthieu Roy, you should not be trying to beat guys 1 on 1 with no puck support at the blueline. Ever.

The former caused the Chimera chance, and the latter caused the Penner penalty. Both of them have to know better.

                      Re: GDT: Movin on up!

Grebeshkov is becoming one of the better D on the Oilers.. has been for probably about 20 games now. I saw some splits the other day that backs that up. Very nice touch by Cogliano on the goal there, and a heady play by Gagner as well. And of course the aforementioned Grebeshkov started it all.

Garon is letting in a few too many shots from the outside that he sees the whole way. Perfect shot or not, NHL goalies can't be letting in shots from the outside like that... I think Roloson should get the start against Nashville.

Everytime I see Jan Hejda play I can't help but wonder why in the blue hell the Oilers didn't bring him back. I've taken a complete beating on the site for saying he was a top 4 defenseman... and yet here he is, on a team higher than us in the standings, playing 21 minutes a night on the top pairing and sitting at +12 after the Nash goal.

Cogliano ties it up seconds after Nash scores!

                        1-1

Also, great pass by Grebeshkov. That guy has some exciting offensive skills.

The NHL calculates winning % by # of points out of total # of points available to the team. Therefore the Oilers are currently .500.

If you don't like it, take it up with the league.
As for the Oilers tonight, they sure seem to be forcing long passes through the neutral zone. The need to support the puck better, or they're in for a long night.

I know that we have some rookies that are sitting pretty in rookie scoring race. But I wonder if our regulars weren't hurt how much time they'd (not) be getting as a result and have lower point totals?

What they OUGHT to do is the following: 3 pts for a win, 2 for an OT win, 1 for an OT loss, and 0 for a regular loss.

This way there's an incentive at every stage of the game. And, a team is penalized for not being able to beat a team in regulation, just like now a team gets a benefit for not getting beaten in regulation.

I know, it'll never happen, except in my own obsessed little world. But a guy can dream
Out of my mind; back in five minutes.
