    Horcoff's Price Continues to Rise, Langkow Signed...

    .... 4 years, $20,000,000.

    If Lowe signs anything to Horcoff under $6,000,000 per annum, it's a good signing.... though make sure it's got years on it. Extending him July 1st (he has one year left at $3,600,000) should be very high on Lowe's "to do" list.

    Especially after recently seeing how Stoll did in his place.

    Langkow is a heck of a player... but it's pretty easy to argue Horcoff is (slightly) superior... and also a year younger.

    With Langkow making $5,000,000, Jokinen making $5,500,000, Marleau making over $6,000,000, Chris Drury making over $7,000,000 and Mike Ribeiro making $5,000,000 a season...

    Well, Horcoff's agent would have to be partially retarded to sign for anything less than $5,000,000, unless Horcoff decides to take a significant home-town discount. Given that he's a PA rep, I'm not so sure that's all that likely.

    Here's hoping Kevin Lowe has learned from past mistakes, and doesn't leave this till the '09 trade deadline.

          I have to give credit to team's like Calgary who don't wait on these things and lock up their great players early. Lowe needs to learn from that. Extend Garon now and extend Horc ASAP.

            The way Calgary is structuring their team, they are destined to be perpetual losers. Jesus, look at the cap figures they have committed to next year already:

            Iggy - $7,000,000
            Tanguay - $5,250,000
            Langkow - $5,000,000
            Aucoin - $4,000,000
            Sarich - $3,600,000
            Warrener - $2,350,000
            Regehr - $4,000,000
            Phaneuf - $6,500,000
            Kipper - $5,800,000

            That's $43,500,000 commited already against a cap rumored to be $56,000,000. Thats 43 mil for 3 forwards, 5 defensemen and a goalie. 3 of those defensemen are grossly overpaid. They still need at a minimum 10 forwards, 2 defensemen and another goalie. 13 players left to sign at less than 13 million wiggle room. Where the hell are they going to come up with a second line? They have zero kids capable of stepping in and playing hard minutes for small dollars like Anaheim did last year. I thought if they were able to deal Tanguay they would be in OK cap shape, but they just compounded their problems by signing Langkow long term too.

            Also, is it just me, or is it typical Calgary loser mentality to overpay to keep an underachieving bunch together? This team has done next to nothing since '04. They've backed into the playoffs the last 2 seasons. Why shell out huge money to keep them together?

                Calgary's biggest problem is they suck at drafting....

                I mean, the Oilers are in trouble too, but it's a lot easier to hide when you have a bunch of kids who can out-perform their contracts easily.

                The Aucoin contract is the killer in Calgary, imo. Warrener hurts, but it's not the end of the world.

                  Cap management 101...the only way you win with a top heavy lineup is to have kids that can overperform what they are being paid. I hate to keep going back to Anaheim, but they are the blueprint for winning with a lot of big dollar guys at the top of the lineup. They had 13 mil tied up in 2 guys on the blueline, plus Giguere making 5 mil and guys like Marchant making 2.5. They won because of guys like Beauchemin, Getzlaf, Perry, Penner and Kunitz. Calgary has no one even close to that caliber. They will be worse next year, bank on it.

                      They're just too top heavy. I mean, honestly, there aren't any glaringly BAD contracts on that team. Not a single one.

                      There's just so many BIG ones. At some point, you have to cut bait... and they're not. They have to move someone, and they'll have a gun to their head so they'll get pennies on the dollar.

                      Assuming the $56,000,000 report is correct, the Flames have $22,842,000 committed to Iginla, Tanguay, Langkow, Lombardi, Primeau, Nilson, Moss and Boyd. They have $21,950,000 committed to Phaneuf, Regehr, Sarich, Warrener, Eriksson and Aucoin. They have $5,833,000 comitted to Kiprusoff.

                      That's $50,625,000. $5,375,000 in cap space.

                      They need to sign 4 forwards and a goalie with that money... along with 2 more bench players and a backup goalie. Figure $1,500,000 for the last 3 combined, and it gives them $3,875,000 to sign their bottom 4 forwards.

                      Calgary has been lit up the last couple of years due to lack of depth... and unless they make a deal here, or get a few ridiculous value contracts, that will continue in the future. Good times .

                              First line center? Absolutely. There's not even an argument any more. He's produced far too much to not be considered a first line center. It's in the Brind'Amour mold... but last I checked, it doesn't matter how someone does it, so long as they do it.
