Re: Official deadline thread...
Word has it Havelid can be had for a 3rd or 4th rounder. Do that every day of the week and twice on Sunday!

Tjarnqvist could also be another good person to target for D. Same goes for Zanon out of Nashville.

It would be great to get Billy G but like Earl said he wants to stay in the east.

I keep flip-flopping on Olli Jokinen. I'd like it except he still on the books for another 5.25 cap hit next year. I hear the Flames are looking long and hard at bringing him in.

Another strong rumour has Bouwmeester to Flyers for Lupul, Carle and prospect Van Riemsdyk. That would be quite a steal on the Panthers part as I don't see J-Bo re-signing there.
But the Panthers are in a playoff spot. I'm not sure they're willing to jeopordize that. That organization NEEDS to make the playoffs, they have to generate some interest. I wouldn't be surprised if they hold onto J-Bo and hope to make a little run in the playoffs, try and re-sign him and let him walk away for nothing if it comes to that.
These pretzels are making me thirsty.

Yeah, but I thought I had read somewhere that he might be willing to go to Calgary since it is still near home for him. but does Calgary have the cap space for him? I know they got sweet deals for Kipper, Iggy et al., but adding another big contract could hand-cuff them, no?

Also, Derek Morris is rumoured to be on the move...

Re: Official deadline thread...

The more I look at Edmonton's roster and salaries, the worse it seems to me.

Crappy Fact #1: Shawn Horcoff.
Horcoff makes $3.6 this year, but his new contract begins next year and he'll make $7M. No other team will be dumb enough to trade for him. In fact, if the cap doesn't rise significantly, and I don't see how it will in this recession, you'll see Cole go to UFA and nothing to replace him. Horcoff's new salary will eat up what Cole was being paid! Worse yet, Horcoff's contact is for 6 years at 7, 6.5, 6.5, 6, 4, and 3 Million. Nobody will want him for 3-4 more seasons.

Crappy Fact #2: Dustin Penner.
Penner makes $4.25 Million and his contract runs for another 3 seasons. Because his salary is lower, it may be easier to sucker someone into trading for him, but it's unlikely.

Crappy Fact #3: Cap Space.
Since the Oilers have saved about a million in cap space with Vishnovsy on IR, they have almost $2M in space. But with everyone healthy, the Oilers have about half a million in cap space. If the cap goes up by a million next season then that's $1.5M in space. I would expect some owners to fudge their revenues to keep the cap rising, but the reality is that the NHL isn't generating more revenue right now. Some markets are struggling badly. Assuming a million in cap increase, and $1.5M in space, the Oilers cannot afford to re-sign Cole, and cannot afford to trade him for a good player.

So, in the end the Oilers may swap out some parts, but they are badly hamstrung by Shawn Horcoff and Dustin Penner. And let's face facts: neither of those players are very good. Neither deserves anything like the salaries they get. Neither really help the Oilers that much. Yet Oilers they will remain unless Tambellini can sucker someone. Worst of all, we're already out of any real free agency frenzy in the offseason. Add in the dreadful coaching that these guys get and you know how things will go for the next 2 seasons. By 2011/12 the Oilers will be able to offload Horcoff and Penner and they can then start to build a real team. Hopefully with a real coach. Until then, what you see is what you will get.

If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.

The saddest part is that we're that close to the cap with the players we have. I look at our roster and think to myself that we should have significant room to work with.

Yup, and those of us (including me) who defended Lowe all of those years have to admit that we were wrong and Burke was right. Lowe ran this team into the ground. Thanks to him, we're fooked for the next 2 seasons at least.

The Oilers have some good young talent. But they're not going to achieve they way they could under MacTavish. And so many wasted years of Hemsky's contract.

Ugh.

Esksfans.com:

The only place where front-loading a contract on a cap team to lower the cap hit is a bad thing.
"This year, we did what we were supposed to do. We fought as a team. We fought as a team. And the fact is, we gotta go back and go to work, to make sure we finish this next time. That's all we gotta do. This right here makes us stronger. Let's understand who we are as a team. Let's understand this right here makes us stronger." - Ray Lewis, January, 2012.

front loading? Doesn't the cap work through averages to avoid teams doing that?

Re: Official deadline thread...

Giving a 29 year old who has had 1 good season in his lacklustre career a 6 year contract, where the first 4 years run at 7, 6.5, 6.5, and 6 Million dollars may have been the worst thing that Lowe ever did. He's untradeable because he makes more than double what he is worth. And his salary prevents you from getting better players. Shawn Horcoff's is one of the worst contracts in hockey.

And guess what else? By the time you can finally offload that deadweight, who else's contract will run out, leaving him an unrestricted free agent?

Horcoff's cap hit next year will be $5.5 Million. Considering what you get from him, that's beyond stupid. He's costing $7M and eating up $5.5M in space for what is, essentially, a $3M player.

A cap hit is the total earnings of the contract divded by the years.

Real money is worth more today than it will be in 5 years.

Hence teams like Edmonton, Detroit, Philly, etc., have a huge advantage because they can get to a player to agree to less money over a period of time by giving him more of it up front.

What would be better...

If Horcoff was paid 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6 and had a $6,000,000 / season cap hit, or is paid 7, 6.5, 6.5, 6.5, 4, 3 and having a $5,500,000 / season cap hit.

Because a lot of the posters here for some idiotic reason seem to believe the first scenario is better, given the constant "ZOOMG HE MAKES SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!one!!111!!!!!!" posts.

Being able to do that is an advantage, and bitching about anything other than the cap hit a player on this team has is ****ing retarded.

What makes it worse it that I read the other day that he has a no movement clause for the first 4 years. Ouch!

And considering that the Oilers will likely look to trade Horcoff as soon as he drops to $4m, they will end up eating the most expensive part of that contract. The cap hit may still be less than next year's salary, but the team still has to pay that $7M next year. Ignoring that fact is silly. And a $5.5M cap hit for a player like Shawn Horcoff is full ****ing retard. When Horcoff is down to making $4M he will still be unattractive as a tradeable player because he will still have a $5.5M cap hit.

Hell the guy has scored 30 goals exactly zero times in his career. This is his 8th NHL season. He's gotten more than 60 points one freaking time. He's gotten more than 50 points only 3 of those 8 years. This year looks like it will be about 55 points. Whoop-de-phukkin-do! He's 35th in scoring among centres.

The guy 'aint no $7M player. The guy 'aint worth no $5.5M cap hit either. And when he's down to $4M he'll be 34 years old and carry that same $5.5M cap hit for 2 more years.

Yeah. ****ing brilliant.
