    Oilers cut to 48, Khabibulan to play Friday, Lubo on the Weekend

    OILERS ASSIGN 13 PLAYERS

    The Edmonton Oilers have reduced their training camp roster with the assignment of 13 players today.

    Assigned to Springfield (AHL): Jamie Bates (RW), Jordan Bendfeld (D), Kelly Czuy (RW), Jesse Dudas (D), Riley Emmerson (LW), Colton Fretter (LW), Bryan Lerg (LW), Ryan MacMurchy (RW), Matt Nickerson (D), Andrew Perugini (G), Cody Wild (D)

    Assigned to Barrie (OHL): Dalton Prout (D)

    Assigned to Rouyn-Noranda (QMJHL): Philipe Cornet

    The Oilers now have 48 players on their roster.
    Biggest surprises are Wild and Cornet. Cornet had a very good camp... the big test for the kid will be if he can make the WJC or not. If he cracks that team, I think we can start getting excited about the kid.

    Nothing earth shattering though.

    NIKOLAI IN NET

    As the first group was on the ice, Oilers staff confirmed that Nikolai Khabibulin will play in Friday's game. The game will mark his first appearance in an Oilers uniform since being acquired on July 1, 2009.

    "I kinda wanted a few days to practice with the team to feel a little bit better," he said after practice. "You still have to look at the big picture, and the big picture is to get ready for the season and have a good start then, but at the same time everytime I step on the ice, I expect to have a good game and win. And tomorrow's not going to be any different."

    LUBO LOOKS FORWARD TO WEEKEND

    After wrapping up practice, Lubomir Visnovsky confirmed that he will play in at least one of this weekend's pre-season games. Visvnosky, who suffered a season-ending in early February, said "I feel good, I'm ready for contact, I'm ready for NHL."

    "I'm very excited to play that first shift," Visnovsky said to the media. "I don't play tomorrow night -- maybe [Saturday] or Sunday."

    I find it strange that they're playing this many vets so early in the PS. Usually unless their spot is in jeopardy, you don't see them until the latter half/3/4s of PS. Wonder what Quinn's strategy is.....

      Our preseason schedule is super condescend because of the Olympics. We're still carrying over twice what you could normally have for a starting roster... so I think a few things are happening:

      #1) He wants to get a look at the veterans in game situations.
      #2) He's looking for some chemistry.
      #3) They're going to carry a huge roster so that a lot of AHL guys can be substituted in over the course of these games. I think we have 5 games in 6 nights in total here... so you need to evaluate everyone, and you need to keep fresh bodies so nobody pulls a groin or anything like that.

      I think it makes sense, and it means until Sunday, we'll keep seeing lineups that are about 30-50% NHL players. There's also a lot of fighting going on for the top 6 forwards, as we're looking at:

      Horcoff, Hemsky, O'Sullivan, Penner, Cogliano, Gagner, Nilsson and Comrie.. and that doesn't even take into consideration if the coach takes a quick liking to one of Moreau, Pisani, or someone is coming in kicking jams (ex: Eberle).

      They're all on the team, but this is deciding where they'll be on the pecking order.

        If there really isn't a doubt who your core team will be, getting them more ice time in the preseason to gel is smart.

          i think its a good thing he's playing the vets.. proves to me that no one's job is safe...also the fact he's a new coach and needs to look at players, and helps em Gel quicker...... So far i've liked Quinn

            Why is Wild and Cornet a surprise to you? Unless there are several injuries or a wack of trades, the defence is set. As well, with the amount of NHL forwards, a junior player is not going to make the team "sorry Eberle" and keeping guy around that have no chance to make the team, is a waste. Might as well give as much camp time to the NHL forwards, some of which will be cut than keep an 18 yr old kid around that has 0 chance of making it.
            Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

              Biggest surprise; they're simply the biggest names there. I disagree there's zero point in keeping them around even if they're not going to make it... it's valuable experience, they get to see how NHL players train, Quinn/Renney get a closer look at them, and it's a huge carrot.
