Hemsky makes a pitch for the Oilers to sign Jagr next year

Oilers a good fit for Jagr: Hemsky

NHL team tried to make deal to bring in aging Czech superstar one year ago

    By Joanne Ireland, Edmonton Journal

Ales Hemsky began rattling off the criteria that his Czech countryman Jaromir Jagr might require should he return to the National Hockey League. For starters, he would want to play for a coach he knew, and he would want to play on a younger team, all of which happens to point to the Edmonton Oilers.

    Coincidence? Hemsky thinks not.

"I don't know how he feels now, after the (Olympic) tournament, but I think after he's had some time he will want to come back for one or two years. He can still play on a small rink," said Hemsky, who is recovering from shoulder surgery.

"I think he would come here ... but that's just speculation."

The 38-year-old Jagr is in the final year of his contract with Avangard Omsk in the Kontinental Hockey League and has told Hemsky he is contemplating a return to the NHL, where he racked up 1,599 points in 1,273 games. The question, of course, is what direction the Oilers will take in the off-season. They would have to make room on the roster and within the salary cap and they would have to decide if they want to add an aged player to their rebuilding program.

"I think he can still play," said Hemsky. "He's not like he was but he can still be a difference maker.

"He's a superstar. Just to have him on the team is good for everybody. He's a guy who can do 70 points. We don't have guys who can do 70 points."

The Oilers had reportedly cooked up an arrangement with Omsk last spring that would have seen Jagr in Edmonton colours if Avangard did not make the playoffs. In the summer of 2008, the Oilers tried to sign him to a one-year $7-million contract but he instead signed a two year, $10-million contract with Omsk.

Jagr told CBC Sports during the 2009 world championships that the Oilers efforts had not gone unnoticed.

"I was excited when I heard that Edmonton pushed pretty hard to get me and I really appreciate it," Jagr said at the time. "And if I ever go (to the NHL) they would be my No. 1 pick because they showed interest in me first.

"I will never forget that and I respect that. They would be my first pick."

Jagr played for Oilers associate head coach Tom Renney when he was with the New York Rangers.

"He doesn't have to have the role he used to have but he has to feel comfortable," Hemsky said.

This is only about a decade too late.

    No thanks.

Ordinarily, if we were competing for a playoff spot, I'd love to see him here. However, given that this team should be dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up, no thanks.

We are going to get a superstar this offseason. But his name is Taylor Hall, not Jaromir Jagr.

I'd take him in a heartbeat. For a reasonable amount of money of course.

...and who's going to teach Hall how to be a superstar? Ovie had Federov. Crosby had Lemieux. It wouldn't hurt to have Jagr around for a year or two.

So long as it's a one year deal - absolutely.

I agree....would be nice to have a guy the young ones can learn from. Even when Adam Oates stopped by Edmonton, his face-skills were passed on to the other centres and for a couple of years the Oilers were one of the best face off teams in the league. However, the key word is cheap....with Horcoff's and Moreau's burdens there will not be much room under the cap to bring Jagr here...plus, I would expect he wants to go to a contender not a rebuilding team.

If your franchise player makes a pitch for someone, you have to at least keep an open mind about it. Yes, Hemsky is not our GM and yes, Jagr is somewhat past his prime, but it's worth it at least to look into. After all, look at the chemistry Hemsky and Jagr, as countrymen, would have together? You might have the makings of a dynamite 1st line with Penner-Jagr-Hemsky.

Don't forget we also signed Adam Oates when he was past his prime. He didn't pile on the points, but he sure as heck taught Jarret Stoll a thing or 2 about faceoffs. Jagr, IMO, could be a similar mentor to guys like Gagner, Cogliano, Hall/Seguin.

And really, "past his prime" is a relative term. In his last 3 years as a player, Gretzky put up 97, 90, and 62 points. Now is that a far cry from the 215 he put up in 85-86 as an Oiler? Absolutely - but it's still pretty darn good.

IMO, as long as the price is right - say $4-5 mill per for 2 years or $5-7 mill for 1 year depending on whether his Russian team has any interest in re-signing him - then why not? Even if he's older, he's still a pretty good player - last season in the KHL he put up 53 points in 55 games, of which 25 of those points were goals. Name 1 Oiler besides Penner who's done that this year - you can't.

One year deal or two if he gives up a big $ discount. I'd have no problem at all getting him. Assuming we are going to rid ourselves of a number of our vets it won't hurt to get him. Still a good player though not top echelon. Not a character problem from all reports.

He's not on the roster now though, so technically signing Jagr would be a rebuilding move.....

If it's a one year deal... worst case scenario is you deal him off at the trade deadline for futures, helping the rebuild.

Given the fact the team looks set to deal off one of Souray/Lubo, having a guy who can play the point on the PP won't hurt either.

While another high pick next year would be nice, the fact of the matter is the sooner we can get playoff XP for guys like Gagner, Smid & Gilbert, the better. Not to mention the assets on the team are a lot more valuable if the team doesn't suck.

Gagner-Eberle-MPS-Hall is more than enough youth to build an elite team around.

I agree if it is a 1 yr deal. It would help take some of the pressure off of some of the young guys and it would make Hemsky happy.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

Like most everybody else here, it it's a short term deal and the rmoney isn't ridiculous, I don't see the problem...

A one-year deal at 5-7 M is ludicrous for a team who is rebuilding and at the Cap right now. Even if they shed some salary in the off-season, still no way do you pay that kind of dough for an aging star on a team that won't even be close to making the playoffs next season, no matter who they draft at #1 or 2....
