    Katz to move the Oilers? FALSE RUMOUR

    He is chasing the lease on Copp's Coliseum in Hamilton. This is the front page story on the Journal today.

    I wonder if the NHL would block this move? The 5th all-time Stanley Cup winner out of Edmonton?

    Another pushy move by this Oilers owner. He is not turning out to be the person I thought he was. I am sure it is a ploy to get his arena.

    If it is a ploy to get his arena, it will backfire.

      Very smart move to get those rights. It will have ZERO effect on any leverageing regarding an arena here. In fact if he ever even tried to pull that move things could get very ugly very quickly.

        You'd think that he being a fan when Puck pulled this stuff he would of been wiser not to repeat those same actions. He is going to lose support from those of us who were on his side.

        But is this any surprise? In all honesty his takeover of the Oilers was a very hostile takeover. His attempted signing of Hossa was very pushy, at least IMHO it was. So were a few other attempted free-agent signings, I think he actually scared players away.

        He is upset at the delay for the public hearings. One of the reasons council delayed it is they do not want this being an election issue. When I was at the Oilers breakfast I asked Patrick Laforge why they were not attempting to win over the fans in another way. He said Mayor Mandell has asked the Oilers to keep quiet on the issue and that they will get their arena. It is really no surprise he is in their hip pocket, as Mandell obviously has a price-tag.

        I have always thought he was asking too much from the city. I think a new arena district is good for job creation but Katz is starting to lose support from me. I think the Oilers deserve a similar deal as what the Senators received.

        The irony of this is for the longest time we had one of the newest arenas in the NHL (likely 25 years). The original six teams were playing in rinks close to 100 years old. Suddenly we need a new building yesterday.

        Bettman better say the same things as were said about NHL teams not moving. He better not side with Katz by supporting this ploy. We better hear these comments from Bettman and soon. He wouldn't let NHL hockey move from markets where it was failing. He better not let a team that is striving move. Bettman mentioned building tradition and not permitting teams moving as a sign of loyalty to the community, he better speak up quick.

        I know it isn't likely the Oilers will move but I have grown sick and tired of this crap occurring.

          Why do you feel it was a smart move if you think it could also hurt him?

            I think he's saying that it's unrelated to the Oilers. A move to get money from anyone else who wants a team there.

            I'm not sure that's a smart move either, though.

              He's a business man, and see's the ability to perhaps bring added revenue from running a second building. Should we freak out because he most likely picked up the lease on 25 sites for a rexall drug store last month too?
              I will not, for a moment longer, support an organization who chooses to cowardly kneel where they once fiercely & proudly stood

                Who's to say it has anything to do with the Oilers and not him just wanting more property to lease out and make a profit on? I haven't read the article...but it seems like the guy's got his hands in pretty much everything...is real estate speculation not a possibility?

                  Risky and it could (and has) send the wrong message to Edmontonians.

                    What the article does say is the lease is for either a relocation or an expansion. It is vague in details and the Oilers didn't return calls.

                        Ok...just read the article and no where does it say anything about him moving the team or really...any details whatsoever. But it's from an unspecified source on another website that's speculating his motives so that has to be the reason...
                        There's a chance that it's just internet BS...

                              Given that people want to move a team to Hamilton, it's extremely smart business sense to have the lease on the building where said team would likely play.

                              Some people REALLY read too much into this stuff.
