NHL Cap / Waivers Experts - HELP

So...when I look at the glaring holes the Oilers have on defence, one thing that I ask myself (and I ask it at the risk of scorn and ridicule...) is why we might not contact the Rangers and inquire about them bringing up Wade Redden from his purgatory assignment in the AHL and then claiming Redden on waivers...?

Unless I am missing something we should (?) have cap space to accommodate his contract - as gross as it is - and he seems to fit the bill of the kind of veteran, steady defencemen this team would need.





Since we just spit-ball on this site at the best of times, how good or how stupid of an idea would this be?

How long is his contract? Sounds to me like a good idea. What is the cap hit? (Irrelevant as it may be with our cap space.)

On recall waivers, the Oilers would be on the hook for $3,250,000 a season for the next 2 seasons.

It's the right kind of idea, but not the right player. His wife + NY ruined him... pretty sad story really.

I'd like to see the Oiler's throw together a package of beans (say... Wreck'Em, Hamilton and a 2nd round draft pick) and look for teams that are tight to the cap.

Paul Martin, Adrej Meszaros, Daniel Girardi all come to mind.

Redden at $3,25 Million would be a better deal, then the $6.5 million full rate. I do not think that it would happen as it would work for the Rangers better as a buy out The reason is the cap hit would be lower because it is stretched out over a longer period of time (it is two thirds of the amount left over twice the length left this is why the Oilers still have a cap hit next year for Souray even though he only had one year left on his deal at the time of the buy out). The Oilers could then pick him up pretty cheap.

Oh, but the Rangers also would do this...

Right now, they're paying him $6,500,000 real dollars, but $0 cap dollars.

This is why the Rangers will let him ride out his contract. They don't care about the money, cap space is more of a concern.

Cap space would depend on who is coming down the pipe in terms of free agents. I do not think that there are any really big names coming up this year in terms of UFAs and the Rangers do not have any of their big names with contracts coming up for a few years. I guess it also depends on how Redden is doing in the minors in terms of working with the young guys down there and his attitude. IF it turns sour then they may have to get rid of him or lend him to another AHL team (like the Oilers did with Sourey)
