Simon nets pair as Flames blank Oilers

CALGARY (CP) - Chris Simon scored twice and Miikka Kiprusoff made 19 saves Wednesday as the Calgary Flames won 5-0 over the Edmonton Oilers in NHL pre-season action.
Stephane Yelle, Shean Donovan and Dion Phaneuf also scored for Calgary, which scored four goals on five shots in the third period.
Calgary was nursing a 1-0 lead in a fairly lacklustre game Shean Donovan's unassisted goal off a Jarret Stoll giveaway at 7:04 of the third period ignited the home team and the sell-out crowd of 17,439.
Simon followed with his first of the night at 8:59 to make it 3-0 and rookie Phaneuf scored on a hard one-time slapshot from the blue-line at 11:17.
Simon wrapped up the scoring at 11:49, re-directing Matthew Lombardi's pass behind Oiler goaltender Ty Conklin.
Conklin (1-1-0) had just one save in the third period after stopping 21 of 22 over the first 40 minutes.
Calgary improves its pre-season record to 4-2-1 while the Oilers drop to 3-3-1.
Kiprusoff is unbeaten in his two starts.
The game was scoreless until Yelle hit a rebound out of the air waist-high and past Conklin.
Off-season additions Chris Pronger and Michael Peca had the night off for Edmonton.
Calgary finished 1-for-9 on the power-play while Edmonton went 0-for-4.
Notes: Calgary wraps up the home portion of its pre-season schedule with a 4-0-0 mark. The Flames begin the regular season with a four-game road trip and will not return to the Pengrowth Saddledome until the home opener versus Dallas on Oct. 13th. ...
