    Flames blank Oilers 5-0

Simon nets pair as Flames blank Oilers

CALGARY (CP) - Chris Simon scored twice and Miikka Kiprusoff made 19 saves Wednesday as the Calgary Flames won 5-0 over the Edmonton Oilers in NHL pre-season action.

Stephane Yelle, Shean Donovan and Dion Phaneuf also scored for Calgary, which scored four goals on five shots in the third period.

Calgary was nursing a 1-0 lead in a fairly lacklustre game Shean Donovan's unassisted goal off a Jarret Stoll giveaway at 7:04 of the third period ignited the home team and the sell-out crowd of 17,439.

Simon followed with his first of the night at 8:59 to make it 3-0 and rookie Phaneuf scored on a hard one-time slapshot from the blue-line at 11:17.

Simon wrapped up the scoring at 11:49, re-directing Matthew Lombardi's pass behind Oiler goaltender Ty Conklin.

Conklin (1-1-0) had just one save in the third period after stopping 21 of 22 over the first 40 minutes.

Calgary improves its pre-season record to 4-2-1 while the Oilers drop to 3-3-1.

Kiprusoff is unbeaten in his two starts.

The game was scoreless until Yelle hit a rebound out of the air waist-high and past Conklin.

Off-season additions Chris Pronger and Michael Peca had the night off for Edmonton.

Calgary finished 1-for-9 on the power-play while Edmonton went 0-for-4.

Notes: Calgary wraps up the home portion of its pre-season schedule with a 4-0-0 mark. The Flames begin the regular season with a four-game road trip and will not return to the Pengrowth Saddledome until the home opener versus Dallas on Oct. 13th. ... Before the game, Calgary assigned forwards Tomi Maki, David Moss, and Brandon Prust to Omaha (AHL). Twenty-nine players remain in camp - 17 forwards, nine defencemen, and three goalies. ... Well, I guess what goes around come around. A great game by the Kipper, gotta give him credit. I can't wait until the regular season, it's gonna be real competitive in our division.

The fact is Conklin let's in way too many goals. Jussi is a much better all around goaltender then Conklin will ever amount to.

Time will tell I guess. I'm willing to look past any preseason rustiness for now anyways.

We'll see, Conks had a good first 40 mins.

I agree. But in his defense we did leave all our vets at home. Calgary iced their regular season team.

Four goals in that time span is inexcusable whether it be pre season, regular season, or the playoffs. I'm still willing to give Conks a shot because of his solid 40 minutes.. but I'd love to see him step it up another notch.

That's funny. I have Harvey on my dynasty mode in the third season. He actually turned out really good!

C'mon, you know by doing this you're going to have Feterik on here throwing it all back at you. Why?

I've never even heard of entire fourth line of the Oilers tonight.

You don't know how JFJ is? Kyle Brodziak?

Not elite prospects, but certainly no slouchers. Jacques has 2nd line potential (was a 2nd round pick), while Brodziak had a pretty decent season with the RR. He has potential to be a bottom 6 player (3rd or 4th line center)
