Amazing... 115.3 decibels last night, loudest NHL arena ever

Edmonton truly has the loudest fans in the entire league... we set a new record last night according to many with a decibel reading of 115.3. Many say they have never heard a building this loud in their entire lifes, not even the old Chicago stadium... it should get even louder in game 4.

    No atmosphere like Rexall Place.

Mark Messier : When he arrived at Rexall Place last night, he experienced a scene beyond anything he'd ever experienced here before.

"We always thought we had the loudest crowd in the playoffs back then, but, to me, this is just amazing.

"The Edmonton fans, who had already out-done themselves in creating a loud, proud environment during the three previous rounds, once again took over the singing of O Canada from Paul Lorieau at an unprecedented volume."

"But what blew everybody away this night was the great gusto the Canadian fans had in singing the U.S. national anthem.

Has the Star Spangled Banner ever been sung that loud any where outside the U.S.? American writers were suggesting it was certainly the loudest their anthem had been sung on either side of the border this Stanley season."

"Messier wasn't the only one in the building who was raving about the scene for Game 3 of the final."

Nothing, not Chi Stadium nobody.. has ever topped the NEW Genration Oilers fans..

"Emerging from the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast booth after the first period, play-by-play broadcaster Bob Cole, who has worked 35 years of Stanley Cup playoffs, said nothing topped this, clearly loudest building i've ever wittnessed."

"This is the best I've ever seen,'' he declared. "Hockey is terrific when it's like this.''

Colour commentator Harry Neale said it had to set some sort of record."

"It's spine-tingling,'' said ex-Oiler Colin Campbell, the NHL director of hockey operations. To talk about it sounds kind of corny. But to experience it ... incredible. I brought five people from my Toronto office here because I believed they had to experience this(noise). They had to experience what this is all about.(atmosphere inside Rexall place)''

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman had been here in the Western Conference final, suggested it keeps getting better(and Louder).

"It was great,'' he said. "Just great.''

Pierre Mcguire " I sence this maybe the loudest group of fans ever in the nhl, this is truley remarkable they never quit, and there always chanting something. A goal is deafning, no where else do you hear a crowd of this structure. I've been able to work in the *so called loudest building, Chicago Stadium* but not even hawks fans can top this, it's something everyone needs to experience, puts a smile on.

I'm guessing that's sustained which would be incredible. Anyone know what our peak level was? Carolina is claiming they have the highest at 133.2dB set during the Buffalo series.

That's an inflated number, and complete Bull****.

At 130 decibels your eardrums start to bleed. The decibel levels are on a non-linear scale... going from 114 to 115 is a 10x increase in loudness... so for Carolina to be at 133 they would have to be over 100 times louder than Rexall which is complete BS. People I know that were at the RBC during the first two games, and here for game 3 say it's no contest.

According to the link an increase of 10dB would be 10x more powerful. Keep in mind, they're talking about peak noise and not sustained which makes it plausible. There's no question we have the loudest fans for 60 min

20 dB's higher would still be 100x louder, so from 115 dB to Carolina's "133 dB" would still be almost 100x louder, and so it's pretty much impossible.

In game 2, when the Canes scored their first goal, they showed a decibel reader, and it said 124 or something....did anyone else catch that ?

Artillary fire sits around 120 db, which is defening. 133 is not possible.

Yup, I saw that. I don't know what to make of it if everyone here is saying it's impossible to reach those levels *shrug*

Even without the stats, you can just tell that Rexall is louder and has a better atmosphere. I get chills when the Oilers step on the ice and when we take over the anthem.

20dB higher than total silence would be 100x louder. I don't think they mean 20dB higher from, say, 110dB to 130dB means it would be 100x louder than 110dB...at least that's the way I interpreted it.

You'll get no argument from me on that. The atmosphere here is electric!

Btw, I didn't see the readout fluctuate on that guy's reader. You know how when you buy a new LCD clock they have a sticker that displays some numbers on it to show what it looks like it when it's in use? Maybe this guy just pulled it out of the box to show the camera what he just bought:

"HEY, LOOK WHAT I JUST GOT AT SEARS!!!!!!!!!"

There is no way Carolina even hit 120 decibels.... they are not that loud.

Must've gotten their decibel meter from radio shack....
