I was away last week and wasn't able to get 'Net access to set a thread up - so here are the quick results from this week.

I went to game 3 today...Huskies got the benefit of a lot of calls, but they had about a 7 min stretch late in the 1st half of absolutely suffocating defence, and that was the turning point.

Went to game 3 for the Pandas as well...they wanted it bad. They came right out and just went after Sask...held CIS all-time rebounding leader and this year's scoring leader Sarah Crooks in check the whole game, shot well, were up by 10 after the 1st q, about 20 at half, about 20 after the 3rd, and held on from there. Great game.

I didn't go to either game...but listen to this.

Game 1: 9-0 Pandas. Shots: 62-2 Pandas. Yeah, that's right - SIXTY-TWO to TWO. Allowed one in the first, one in the 2nd, averaging over one shot per minute at the other end. WOW.

Game 2: 5-0 Pandas. Shots: 41-11 Pandas.

Totals: Goals: 14-0 Pandas. Shots: 103-13 Pandas.

Both volleyball teams head to Nationals, and the Pandas hoopsters head to the CW Final Four, so the only home action this week is on the ice...the Pandas host Manitoba in the CanWest Final and the Bears host UBC in the Mountain Division Final.

Overview: After blowing the CW Final Four, the Bears drop 3 seeds to 4th for Nationals. But this may not be all that bad...UBC is their Achilles heel, and assuming no other upsets, Bears wouldn't play the 'Birds till the final round. Any one of the CanWest teams could easily win this...the rest of the country isn't really comparable with the ball we have out here.

Overview: Opposite to the Bears' performance last week, the Pandas upset to win CanWest and gain the #1 seed going into Nationals. Like with the Bears, any of the top 6 or so teams could win. Laval are defending champions and are a relative unknown...so it should be interesting.

If you're picking one Pandas game to go to, these would be the ones to choose from...they lost to Manitoba once, and only beat them by 2 another time (all the other wins were by 4 or more). I can't make the Bears games anyways, but if they win, next week against probably Saskatchewan should be great games.
Hopefully both v-ball teams do really well at Nationals, and I really hope the Pandas hoops can make it...there won't be any other schools sending hopefully 5 major teams to Nationals in the same year.

Aww crap.... Bears V-ball was SO freakin' dominant all season and they just fell off the rails in playoffs.

At least they got the silver -- but that's still a disappointment, IMO.

They are a very, very young team, and were not even supposed to make Nationals this year.

You're both right.

Considering how they did this year (blowing thru CanWest again and then collapsing in the CW Final Four/national final), it IS a disappointment. This is the 6th year in a row, IIRC, that they've made the final...they've only won it twice, IIRC.

BUT, considering 6 of 12 guys are new to the team this year, only 2 of the guys on the team this year played anything significant in the final last year, and they lost 5 of 7 starters from last year, I think they did pretty darn well. This was supposed to be a complete rebuilding year, with a possible playoff spot - NOBODY expected them to go 19-1 again, or to take the conference, or to be ahead of the TWU's and UBC's.

It's kinda like the Oilers' run last year...I'm definitely disappointed that they didn't bring home any banners (and that they didn't even medal at CanWest), but I'm EXTREMELY pleased that they got as far as they did considering preseason expectations - they should be a lot of fun to watch next year. They're only losing two players (starting libero and middle hitter, which is significant, but it could be worse) and there'll be lots of good players still around.
