    Sam Gagner

I know I cautioned another poster not to give this guy a roster spot just yet, and he won't make our team this year, of course, but man he's looking good against the Ruskies. I think he'll be a really good NHLer. We need more quality draft choices like this. Um, who was the Esks' Number 1 choice last year again? Ah, never mind....

    Re: Sam Gagner

I think Gagner could realistically have a shot at playing on this team for 9 games before killing his junior eligibility.

I'd be fine with that, personally.

Then it depends what he does.

I like the kid, though I wish he was a bit bigger. I also wish he was Czech and played for the Mooseheads, but I try to not hold that bit against him...

I'll be the first to admit that I never get to watch any junior hockey, save for tournaments like this and the World Juniors.

And granted, Russia has been less than stellar

But man-oh-man has Gagner looked impressive thus far. Next to Kyle Turris (and, perhaps even better than), Gagner (to me) appears to be a solid choice by the Oilers -- and even a "steal" considering we got him with the 6th pick.

Gagner has certainly looked impressive but I question what the level of competition is. This is not World Junior Hockey calibre. It looks more like tier 2 Junior A.

However, the Oilers are desperate for offensive touch and right now this guy looks like (next to Hemsky) the best that we have. How long has it been since an 18 year old cracked the lineup? A long time I guess.

With Pisani out we need even more help. Perhaps Cogliano and Gagner both make the team and let's hope that one of Pouliot/Schremp steps it up big time.

I know that this is pouring salt in an old wound but I note that the Hockey News rates Parise in the top 50 stars in the league. No mention of Hemsky.

I also note that the Hockey News has the Flames picked to finish 3rd in the conference while the Oilers are down around 13th. I wonder what they see in the Flames lineup that makes them such a power-house? I think that several of the Flames had career seasons last year and might be infected by the Torres/Pisani/Horcoff syndrome this year.

I think he might have a decent shot of making the roster. i don't think he will be with the team at the start of the season but I could see him playing a number of regular season games this season.

He can't be called up midseason unless we run into a gauntlet of injuries and have to call him up on an emergency basis.

He can make the team and be sent down at any time until he plays his 10th game. After that he loses his junior eligibility. If he is sent down to London, he's there until they are eliminated from the playoffs.

I think he will being playing on the farm this year. or is there some other rule that would prevent this?

Don't worry, MacT will suck the offensive life outta this kid as fast as you can say, " He needs to be more defensively responsible..."

                  Yes there is. He can't.

Yes, he's junior aged. Can't play on the farm.

Hemsky didn't become the player we're seeing now until the lockout year when he went over and played in europe for a season. He came back a much more confident player

I liked what I've seen out of Gagner so far in this tournament. Not the most physically gifted in terms of speed, but it looks like he's a smart player with good work ethic.

Also, this Tavares kid I've heard so much about hasn't been that great. Doughty has impressed though.

And he's still shown immense growth under MacT. Going from a rookie (who made the team at 19) to a PPG player. He's shown tremendous growth as a complete player as well thanks to being forced to play against quality (and with quality) until Game 81 in 05-06.

Game 81 was when it became do or die for the Oilers, and Hemsky didn't play another minute with Smyth and Horcoff until the Cup Finals. In fact, if you want to talk about what MacT should be fired for - I'd look at putting Hemsky back with those two as a starting point.

Hemsky still has a ways to go as a player, but to credit all his growth to a season in the Czech Republic is ludicrous.

Besides - name a player who MacT sucked the offense out of. Horcoff? Pisani? Stoll? Torres?

Are we going to start blaming him for Robbie Schremp struggling in the AHL?

MacT gets no credit from me. I don't like him and i'll dance when he is fired - hopefully that won't be too long of a wait
