    One of this country's most familiar tunes may have been heard on CBC-TV for the last time Wednesday night when the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins and won the 2008 Stanley Cup.

    The Toronto agency representing the composer of the theme tune for Hockey Night in Canada says the CBC has declined to enter into a new licensing agreement for the song for next NHL season.

    A news release posted on the website of Copyright Music & Visuals quotes company president John Ciccone as saying the CBC's licence agreement for the hockey theme song ended with the Stanley Cup final.

    The CBC "has advised the composer, owner and administrator of the musical composition that it is not prepared to enter into a new licence agreement with respect to the use of the theme," the release says.

    The CBC had no immediate comment Thursday morning.

        It's okay. The CBC is going to lose Hockey Night In Canada to TSN anyhow and then none of us will have any reason to watch their crappy station.

            Might as well privatize the CBC if this is the kind of incompetent business decisions they make....

            Obviously the phrase "killing the golden goose" means nothing to these people.

                  The old bat that wrote the original theme kept uping the charges. Not that the CBC is above using taxpayer's dollars but this time they stopped the payment!

                    Well if the CBC broke the contract agreement and sold the music for things beyond the broadcast - like ringtones - and gave her no cut, I'd be upping the price too.

                      Your comments are poetic. We agree someone at CBC's being myopic.

                        I've read that the deal on the table from the owners of the copyright were asking for the same rates they've been getting paid for the past ten years.

                            If CBC doesn't renew, and I'm running things at TSN, I'd be picking up the phone and getting a nice familiar theme to my new Wednesday night broadcasts.
