Cowboys’ Roster Spot Up For Grabs On Irvin TV Show

    What next?

    This from TSN:

Cowboys’ Roster Spot Up For Grabs On Irvin TV Show

DALLAS - The first time Michael Irvin watched "American Idol," he loved the concept of giving undiscovered singers the chance to become stars. Now Irvin is doing the same for NFL wannabes.

The Hall of Fame receiver is launching a reality TV show in which 12 "football neophytes" will compete for an impressive grand prize: a spot on the Dallas Cowboys' training camp roster.

"I don't know if you can walk upon any group of guys that wouldn't say they dreamed of playing in the NFL when they were playing in their front yard," Irvin said Thursday. "So we're going to take a group of guys from their front yard, dwindle them to one and give that guy the opportunity of a lifetime."

The Cowboys confirmed that one of their 80 roster spots will go to the show's winner. The NFL did not immediately return a telephone message.

The show, which doesn't yet have a title, will air this spring on Spike. It is being produced by the same company that's behind "The Biggest Loser" and many other reality TV hits.

Contestants are still being selected. They likely will need a football background - just not too much. They also must be the right age, size and condition to handle an NFL training camp. The Cowboys open camp in late July in San Antonio.

"We want someone who will have a real opportunity to make the team," Irvin said, adding the better the back story, the better an applicant's chance of making the show.

"You could've played college ball and had to give up for some reason. You know how many stories are out there of players who for some reason or another had to walk away from the game. ... We want to find those guys."

Irvin will be the host and he expects to have guest appearances from friends like Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Deion Sanders and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Judges will include Jones and former players and coaches.

I'll watch it. It'd be interesting to know whether it'll be for one position or any because it's hard to compare guys across positions.

6 DBs and 6 WRs. I feel like the camp spot will pretty much be a token PR spot - no guarantee that the guy will be in camp for more than a week.

Didn't this get done before with the NHL?

Ahh...but yeah, likely not taking your football career anywhere with this. But maybe if you were passed over coming out of college and had injuries it's just a nice way to get into it, get a shot....but probably nothing coming of it.

At the same time, there have been guys who have been out of the league or from football for a long time and have gotten it done....a la that 33 year old rookie that returned kicks for the Saints a few years back.

Wonder if any ex-cfl'ers wind up on that show?

What about any of them becoming future CFL'ers?

Perhaps if they were competing for a QB position some chip delivery guys might be trying out?

This is like Vince Papale but more hi-tech.

Too bad you end up on such a ****ty team.
I officially retract my vote for DDS as Prime Minister. He's clearly incompetent.

Well, they sucked last year, so I don't have of a defense....the only thing I can say is that talent was not their problem. They have a ton of talent, but no one to coach them up.

Well, I watched the first 3 episodes of this show on Spike TV tonight....it's better than I thought it would be. The talent level is about where I thought it would be, and it's incredibly over-dramatic...but I like watching the drills and evaluating the talent. It's unlikely that one of these guys will make the game day roster, but it's early.

I'd recommend tuning in...it's not fake, it's football....guys puking on the field, hitting, scrapping. Getting geared up for football season at the very least, making me more excited to go see some Eski training camp.

I'll pass... Reality tv sucks no matter what the angle is.

And alot of this "reality" tv is beyond fake/fixed/stupid/aggravating/stupid/lame/and on and on
