    U. Of Manitoba Football Team Forced To Forfeit Two Victories

For those who are interested in U of A football as this does affect them.

EDMONTON -- The Canada West Universities Athletic Association overturned the results of three Manitoba Bisons games Tuesday due to an eligibility violation.

This means that the U of S will play Regina and the U of A will travel to Calgary

      They had... not anymore apparently

A third game at Simon Fraser has been declared "no contest" because both teams used an ineligible player. The final scores for the two overturned games are recorded as 1-0 forfeits by Manitoba. All statistics for the three contests will remain intact.
      Wow
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

Given that there have been 2 this year, I would hope that all of the programs closely exam all of their players just to make sure.

I'm guessing that if you crack down on one team, you've got to crack down on 'em all.

            Not 100% academic, no.

SFU's was because some kid transferred up from a NCAA school - normally, you have to sit out a year when you transfer. But if you go into a graduate program, the year is waived. There was some confusion over whether this kid was actually in the grad program or not, IIRC.

Manitoba's was because some guy got suspended in 2001 for steroids, which is a 4-year suspension (including 4 yrs of eligibility)...and he played last year for his 5th year, and this year would've been his 6th year...therefore, he's ineligible.

            Or something like that, anyways.

Ya Manitoba had it coming...but the stuff with SFU is bull.

The football season starts so early that when acceptance into Grad Studies goes down to the wire (and in this case, it did), that nobody at SFU should be considered at fault. WHen those games were played, the kid really expected to get into Grad Studies, and so did everybody else. When he didn;t get in, he didn't play any more. Changing the results after the fact seems stupid to me. It would be like asking for the Grad awards the give to swimmers at CIS back because they withdrew from a course, or the calender changed. Its a dumb move.

It seems to me that the Bisons won the Vanier Cup a couple of seasons ago with a team whose average age was 29 or so!! Was there some hanky panky going on then as well??

In any event, it won't matter much for the Bears. They'll now have a much shorter bus trip on their way to getting throttled in the semis.......

Doesn't surprise me considering Manitoba has been viewed as having suspect academic requirements for years. High school players the Bears pass on due to their inability to meet university entrance requirements somehow manage to end up playing for the Bisons.

Just IMO, I think this might've been a "GTFO of our conference" move as far as SFU went, with them going to NCAA and all. I also remember hearing that there was some confusion over self-disclosure with regards to the SFU situation, but I'm not sure what happened there - that might've had something to do with it as well.

Kind of defeats the purpose after they already announced they're leaving, no?!

It's like when the girlfriend announces she's "leaving your broke ass"... and then as she's going out the door I say "Yeah, well you're ugly and and your mother dresses you funny"... then she's all like "you're an idiot" and slams the door... and then I'm like "NO, you're dumped, yeah, I'm dumping you!'... then you get REALLY drunk and leave 10-or-15 messages... then there is some business about a restraining order, pfft.

                      Or is that just me?

They lose their whole season because of a player whose total contribution was 8 receptions for 66 yds and one TD. You would figure someone in Bison adminitration should know the eligibility rules.

The Bisons won in the last year that former Junior Football players (Hilltops, Huskies, Colts ...) could play out their Junior elligability and then play a full 5 CIS seasons. I know that there quarterback played his full junior carear in Regina with the Thunder and then moved to Manitoba to play.

I do think that the SFU punnishment was harsh, as the kid was trying to get into the school. The fact the guy from MAintoba was suspended for drugs, I have no simpathy.

                              That sounds like... consistency.

                              Huh.

Maybe the CFL should look into that?
