Bears lose CIS Championship 3 - 2 in OT to SMU

    Did anyone watch the game?

I was disappointed that St. Mary's won. Yeah...it's nice that they finally have their schools first hockey title ever.

But it was won, partially, on the back of Mike Danton. I believe in second chances - don't get me wrong. But second chances for an ex-NHL player should NOT come from enrollment at a post secondary institution so that you can play CIS level hockey

I watched it. Was a close game...Bears could've won but didn't. Disappointing, but not overly so. Only at U of A is one national championship, three national medals, and three conference championships in the seven major sports a sub-par season.

As far as Danton goes...I don't mind too much. I see your point, but to some extent I applaud him for doing the smart thing - going back to school to get a degree. If he can play hockey while he's there, under CIS eligibility rules...then so be it. Just like Jared Aulin in Calgary recently (though he didn't help them enough to do any damage in playoffs).
We're cheering Fight Fight Fight On Eskimos...

How well did Danton do for them this year? Was it clear he was a big fish in a small pond?
Out of my mind; back in five minutes.

Not the best player that SMU had...but DEFO had wheels over anyone else on the ice. He was wicked fast...but didn't translate that into many points (and, I don't even think he had a goal).

I watched the game. I love Bears hockey almost as much as I love the Esks.

I don't have a problem with someone with a criminal record playing in the CIS. He did his time. Our society can't permanently exclude ex-cons from everything they would want to do.

However, the Danton situation brings up two things:

          1) Should ex-NHL'ers be allowed to compete at all in CIS hockey? I would lean toward no. I believe now every season of pro takes off one season of CIS eligibility. Maybe it should be every GAME of pro.

          2) If Danton had been found guilty while playing in the CIS, he likely would have received a lifetime ban from university sports.

Danton was a strong player for them but not dominant. He looked fast and pesky but in no way was clearly better than anyone.

Nonetheless, it was close, but I would say SMU was the better team on Sunday. The Bears didn't finish all the chances they had in the first.
Taylor Field. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.
