I've been hearing about the scandal the last couple days but didn't get a chance to read up on it until today at lunch. I must say if even a fraction of the allegations are true, Paterno shouldn't just be leaving after the season, but should be gone right now IMNSHO.

A sad end to a legendary career... but I'm having an awful hard time having any sympathy for the man considering his being complicit in sweeping it under the rug.

When Paterno did find out about the abuse, he did report it to Curley and Schultz, they, to their stupidity, purjured themselves. It just doesn't say that Paterno reported it to school officials in this article but it has been reported that way in many other places. In any event, it is a sad end to a persons career.

I wouldn't say Paterno's involvement was the worst of those involved, but from all indications he answers to no-one when it comes to the football team. He tells the AD and anyone else what's what, and so if the investigation died on the vine Paterno at the very least didn't mind that outcome.

If Paterno knew what was going on and he didn't turn that information over to police, he's just as guilty as the other guys who are involved.
I've always like Paterno and Penn State but if what is being alleged is the case and he knew what was happening and said nothing, even AFTER the fact it was said to his higher-ups and they did nothing, IMO he's just as much to blame as they are.

Finally someone connected to Penn made a good decision. Hard to believe something like this could have happened a week ago, and now Paterno has been fired in disgrace.

My guess is that Joe Pa was given a choice, resign or we fire you. He tried to wiggle the rest of the season out of Penn State by saying he would retire after this year. It is a very sad way for a legendary career to end. If he did know what was going on and did not go to the cops, and not just the school admin then he deserves to be fired.

Well, they're both from Washington... yet from opposite sides of the country. If there is a relation I'd imagine it was distantly, as Jerry Sandusky's paternal grandparents immigrated from Poland so that would only leave one generation.

I searched around, but Jerry Sandusky was 17 when Jim was born, so I doubt they're father and son.
