    New US Pro League to be announced?

    This according to the Twitter feed of Gil Brandt, in my mind, one of the most respected NFL analysts out there.

    In a month a new pro spring league will be announced. 8 teams in 2014, 10 in 2015. Will play in old USFL cities w/same names.

    Some of the inaugural teams will be in Oakland, NJ, Philadelphia, and San Antonio.

    This new league is not affiliated with the NFL, not a developmental league. League bought rights to all old USFL names (eg NJ Generals)
    Will be interesting to see what, if anything, they try and do differently than past leagues that have failed and whether this attempt will gain some traction.

      Reviving the old USFL names could be interesting for some of us nostalgia hounds.

      LA may finally get a pro team back in the Express

        Interesting... nice of them to go with the spring, considering it was the move to the fall that put in the nail in the coffin of the original USFL

        With the stadium they're building, it won't be long be before LA gets an NFL team... or two... again... for awhile anyway...

            Not sure if this is the same people behind the 'new usfl' but that league has supposed to have been starting up the past four years and every year they put it back another 12 months

            Would like to know if its the same guy, or other people

              If it is done correct, I think that it could be done. The league would need to start off in smaller markets without the NFL or Big Time NCAA football, although it does not sound like they are going that route, and it could work. The problem with the spring leagues that I have seen is they try and get to big to fast. GO to the 30K seat stadiums rather then the 60k+ stadiums.

              All of that being said I hope that it fails like all of the others, because it will hurt the CFL if it does not.

                      in other words it will be an nfl minor or farm team league.

                        That is the only way that it will work. They will have to get players from the NFL (Think NFL Europe), this could also be good for the NFL as a way to develop officials. IF the NFL does not get on board fast, this league will tank with in 3 years.

                          Why would the NFL get on board? They have the best development league in the world at their disposal for free.

                          The other side of that is that there are literally tens of thousands of players available for a new league.

                            The NFL might want to get on board as a minor league to help develop its players using American Rules, their coaches, and their play books. None of this is the case in Canada. NFL Europe actually sent a lot of players to the NFL (I do not know stats, but I am guessing more then the CFL during the time that the league ran), it was just too costly (relatively speaking) for the NFL to run. With an independent league that they can partner with the costs would go down, but the benefits would still be there.
                            If it is run say like the D-League with the NBA, where is it a hybrid Minor league system (some players are assigned by the NBA, but others are signed by the league itself as opposed to the NHL system where all of the players are assigned by the parent NHL team), it would be interesting to see if it works. Like I said you would need the NFL to be on board, or at the very least not opposed, for this to work. IF the NFL does not like it they are toast.

                              The nfl had no interest in the UFL when it was on its knees begging to be a d league for em

                              Nfl just don't need it...


                              Very tough for any new pro league starting up to get its foot in the door now
