    Re: 2018 Winter Olympics

That was a bit of a surprise silver in the women's slopestyle. A couple of the medal favourites had a tough time with the course and the wind and luckily for us Blouin had a great run.

Those girls were furious, and rightly so. Shame we couldn't see the best do what they are capable of.

Hearing the announcers though they couldn't push stuff back because apparently the judges for slopestyle were judges elsewhere.

I agree though. But, everyone was running down the same mountain, usually against the same wind conditions.

Problem is they're spinning and flipping in the air and need a certain amount of speed just to make the landing area... running that event wasn't just limiting competition but was seriously risking the athletes health. It's a dangerous enough sport in decent conditions.
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

Yeah, but like I said, they couldn't move it. That was stated two or three times. They were stuck.

I'm well aware of what they had to do my the schedule for this couldn't be changed and it was mentioned on the telecast.

It seems hard to believe that they didn't have a contingency for an outdoor event with only 13 days of competition left. I'm more apt to believe NBC demanded something cool and flippy on prime time (even though figure skating was running at the same time) and did want to lose ad dollars.

Truthfully, I have no problem with athletes having to compete against the elements too, that's sport. If people are winning by going conservative, go conservative. Don't cry to me if you lose because you didn't run the ball in the rain.

It goes beyond just going conservative though. You need to be able to make it from the jump to the landing area, and most of them couldn't and ended up crashing on the knuckle... and other would get blown long and have no hope in hell of landing. This isn't football in the rain.

Lawes and Morris are on this morning!! Gotta be to work for 6 so I’ll only be able to catch 6 ends, but after 5 it’s 8-3 with Canada out curling the Swiss by a significant margin.

And a bronze in the Women's luge, the first ever medal for Canada in that sport.

                      So far so good!

That was great to see... the lugers were kinda snake bit at the Olympics. They thought they might make a breakthrough in 2010, but after the tragic accident the courses were shortened and all their prep was for not. Then they started getting World Cup medals and wins, and thought 2014 would be their time... and came away with three 4ths and a 5th. Even before these games they were told they could get elevated to bronze retroactively for the 2014 relay because of the Russian doping, but then that was overturned.

If that wasn't bad enough, she was in 3rd going into the last run, and fell back a position at the finish, and thought she was going to finish 4th yet again... so to see that reaction to winning bronze was something else, but well deserved for Alex Gough and the entire Canadian luge team. This is kinda the last hurrah for a lot of our team, so to come away from the Olympics finally is a huge monkey off their backs. Plus, they still have the relay to come.

                          Sweden 11
So, to evaluate how everyone is doing thru the 1/4 mark...

Norway - 11 - I actually had them at 14 already, so they are below their projected pace. I think that's partially due to the delayed alpine, but also JT Boe has disappointed in biathlon.

Netherlands - 10 - I only had them at 6, so obviously they're crushing it in speed skating

Canada - 10 - I had projected ~8 right now, so they are obviously doing very well on the conversion rate, particularly in snowboard and luge

Germany - 10 - I had them at 9, so they're +1, doing better than expected in biathlon

US - 6 - I had them at 9, so they're struggling a bit. Partially this is due to delays in alpine, but also figured they'd do even better in snowboard then they have, as well as cross country.

^ I know what you mean. I didn't see it on TV but I was watching the Olympic App on my phone and saw she fell to 4th. Was bummed out. But then when I saw the German have a bad run as well, I was pumped for her. Good for her!

Yeah, it's kinda cruel to the German, but they got gold and silver anyway. The luge has been kinda wild. In the last run one of the American girls had a wild crash, and the first day an Austrian girl did. And if you really want to see the agony of defeat, watch a stream of the last slider in the men's luge 4th run from day 2... it's a cruel sport.

As an aside, with the medal in luge, I believe that leaves only ski jumping and nordic combined as disciplines Canada has never won a medal in.

I am very excited for Alex Gough, the luge team, and entire luge world in Canada. They had bad luck in Vancouver, got absolutely screwed in Sochi, and finally made a podium breakthrough. Good for them. I think they'll win a medal in the team event. They deserve it and they'll earn it.
