    Re: Vitamin T update...

    remembered a few more...

    8. Corzo Blanco - not bad, fancy bottle means not worth the $$
    9. El Mayor Repo - not bad
    10. El Mayor Anejo - not bad
    11. 1921 Single Barrel Repo - Very nice
    12. Divino (Mezcal) Repos - made from a unique blend of a couple of different Agave plants (Mezcal can be made from more than one type of Agave, but it must be over 80% Agave to be called Mezcal - Tequila has to be over 51% to be called Tequila... in both cases the designation 100% Agave is the true standard.)
    13. La Fogata (Mezcal) Anejo - oddest Mezcal I've ever had... extremely smoky to the point that it's colour is even 'greyish brown'; a curiousity, but not a fave
    14. Los Abuelos Blanco - one of the very few Tequilas to be made by authentic methods (dating back to the 1800s); tremendous! lots of Agave flavour, nutty and still fresh tasting.
    15. 7 Leguas D'Antaņo Extra Anejo - Spectacular; warm, buttery, caramelly, slightly somky. Yum.
    16. Fina Estampa Repo - Very nice, something that's not too hard to find, but very enjoyable.
    17. MuchoTE Repo - A good generic repo; could work well with some Tequila cocktails while also being sip-able.
    18. Querido Viejo Anejo - A nice 'standard' Anejo
    19. Para Mi Blanco - this was what we used for Marg's to kick things off.

    (still more to come...)

well, you'll have your work cut out trying to find some of those - a few aren't available outside of Mexico. If you do go down to the US I'd suggest you keep your eyes peeled for any products from Partida, Casa Noble, or 4 Copas. They'll all give you the best taste/quality for the price.

Now with respect to Mezcal, what you've had is the equivalent of what Cuervo is to Tequila. Fine Mezcal, while noticeably different in flavours, can be just as smooth as a fine Tequila!

hate to admit it, but you're half right! After ~15 samples I made sure to stay away from the really good stuff for the remainder of the night... no point!

            Alas there was no chunder.

well let's see if I can remember their names... there was Trixie, Jasmine, Ingrid, Brit and Juanita!

we had cold water between every sampling.

We should've only had plain bread or unsalted plain crackers - but we needed more than that to go on so we had platters of authentic Mexican snacks - lightly salted totrillas with real homemade Guacamole, refried beans, salsa; empanadas; flautas - all provided (for an amazing price) by the restaurant Dos Amigos ... which arguably has the best Tequila selection in town!

I'll take that into consideration...thanks.... I have a few friends going to the US and Mexico so I'll have them look for those. Vitamin T is one thing I do enjoy Although some think Im nuts.......I dont drink to get drunk on it, I just enjoy the taste of it, so those suggestions will help. I will probably kick myself for the Mezcal thing....still can't forget the burning from that night But meh good things are worth trying I guess

I was afraid of that I'll just make sure to sample a few at a time....MODERATELY!!

                      Scorpion Anejo Mezcal

I picked up a bottle of Corazon Reposado. Nice tasting, very smooth then gives a nice warm glow a few sec later. Definitely a 'love T'

                          Re: Vitamin T update...

yeah that's a decent sipper. Not too complex, little or no alcohol burn and like you say very smooth so it's good for those who need a bit of convincing that Vit T is not Mixto! I remember that I quite enjoyed it.

I noticed that several stores in Edm also had Corazon Anejo. Don't know much about that one but would be interested to hear your take on it if you ever pick some up.

My next quest (likely on a US run) will be Casa Noble Repo and Anejo. I've tried both and they're stellar. (Their Cristal is one of the two finest blanco's I've ever had... the other is Los Abuelos (aka Fortaleza) - the only Tequila still made using only traditional (+100yr old) methods).

Ottewell Liquor has a good selection of Vit T... ask for Adam Koziak (he's the son of owner Neil who is my brother's good friend).

edit-- just noticed that Corazon Repo has higher ratings than Anejo! (89 to 81).

Chateau Louis Liquors has an even better selection... and their Del Maguey single village mezcals left me drooling! (Turns out this store is owned by the other offshoot of the Koziak family.)

o.k. ... back from Mexico with the latest "haul" ...

                            Baluarte Blanco (mini) [NOM1465]
                            - I love their Repo, so I thought I'd try the Blanco to see how much Agave flavour there is. (Baluarte goes by the name (or did) Insignia in Duty Free shops)

                            Clase Azul Reposado [NOM1416]
                            - I got to sample this before buying at the store... very nice. And it comes in a gorgeous ceramic bottle.

                            Esperanto Anejo (mid) [NOM1416]
                            - Same distillery as Clase Azul (that's what the NOM designation is!) but a step down on the quality scale. I gave the bottle of Repo that I brought back to the neighbours for looking after the house... it's a bit nicer than the Anejo. Still, very good. And a cool doughnut shaped bottle with a hand blown Agave plant in the centre.

Corralejo Triple Distilled Reposado (mini) [NOM1388]
                            - I've had this before... had to get the bottle for the collection.

                            Tequila XQ Anejo (mini) [NOM1522]
                            - I've seen this at a few stores in Edmonton but never tried it. Bottle is 'X' shaped and made of ceramic. This will give me a chance to try before I buy.

                            El Conde Azul Anejo [NOM1533]
                            - Took a flier on this one partly because of the pretty bottle (notice the recurring theme with Tequila?) - nice sphere with hand-blown Agave plant inside and a skinny neck.

                            Arrette Artesanal Reposado Suave [NOM1109]
                            - this is supposed to be a very fine Tequila. We shall see.

Arrette Gran Clase Extra Anejo [NOM1109]
                            - This was the most expensive tequila I've ever bought... and that was in Mexico so I can only imagine how much it would go for North of Mexico. Ranking wise it's on par with the Cabo Uno and Herredura Seleccion Suprema - but noticeably cheaper. Still, I hope I'm not disappointed!

                            Maracame Reposado [NOM1456]
                            - I liked the Anejo so much I had to try the Repo (I've developed an appreciation for what makes a good repo). Opened this up and tried it already... wow! Crisper than the Anejo with more citrus and herbal notes, but still with a tinge of spice. And silky smooth!

Joja Gran Reserva Mezcal Extra Anejo (mid) (2006) [NOM012X]
                            - a 'newer' version than the bottle I bought previously and have yet to open. This Mezcal is made in limited quantities each year.

While I'm at it... there are a few other's that I picked up recently either in Edmonton or here in Toronto that are worth noting...

                            Esplolon Reposado [NOM1440]
                            - An honest good tequila. Nothing special, but one of the best we can get here - as long as you ignore how much we have to pay for it.

Del Maguey Chichicapa Single Village Mezcal [bottled in 2004; before Mezcal's adopted the NOM designation]
                            - Del Maguey makes some of, if not 'the', best mezcals. This one wasn't cheap but I've been told you can't go wrong... like drinking spiced liquid gold!

                            Milagro Select Barrel Reserve Anejo
                            - Better than their regular Anejo. Pretty bottle (again) to match the Repo I've already got.

I've got a lot of photos to take!

edit-- oh yeah! also picked up a nice bottle of Milagro Agave Nectar. I can get Agave Nectar here (long story short... made from same plant as Tequila; it's the natural sap; higher 'sweetness factor' than sugar with a much, much lower glycemic index). This is a critical ingredient for a really good Margarita... and we use it in cooking, in coffee, etc.
