Grey Cup To Return To Calgary In 2009

CALGARY - It seems the Grey Cup game is heading back to Western Canada.

On Wednesday, CFL commissioner Mark Cohon will be in Calgary where it's expected he will announce that 2009 Grey Cup will be played at McMahon Stadium.

Joining Cohon at the news conference will be Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach, Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier, Stampeders managing partner Ted Hellard and club president Scott Ackles.

Calgary last hosted the Grey Cup in 2000 when the B.C. Lions edged the Montreal Alouettes 28-26.

The announcement would mark the first time in three years that the CFL's championship game was held in Western Canada. Last year's contest was held at Toronto's Rogers Centre while this year's game will be played in Montreal.

In 2006, Winnipeg hosted the Grey Cup at Canad Inns Stadium as the B.C. Lions defeated the Montreal Alouettes 25-14.

While the news conference Wednesday will officially signify the '09 Grey Cup going to Calgary, it's not overly surprising. Talk as far back as last summer had the Stampeders being the host team for the game.

Ah, 1993, GC is in Calgary. We're not expected to be there but we upset the Stamps in the own city in the western final. You'll remember it as the snow bowl when Damon Allen scores a decisive TD with Stamp defenders slipping and sliding all over the field. We go on to the Grey Cup game against the Bombers, where we're also underdogs. Calgary was expecting their team to be there so when they lost the western final to us I made some contacts in Cow Town and scooped up a couple of tix for a buddy and me and we took a charter bus down. We beat the Bombers for the Cup win. It was my second best birthday party ever.

I hope you have appreciated my trip down memory lane.

I look forward to another victory in Calgary in '09. It would be great.

Oh, did I mention that I went to the dressing room sale that year and Damon was there watching the replay of the western final on the TV screen. I go up to him to get him to sign something for me and he says, "shush." His fabulous decisive TD was the next play. We watch him score the TD then he shakes my hand and signs my photo. It's a photo of me with the Grey Cup and Stanley Cup, both in the same photo. It's my most treasured sports memorbilia.

OK, now I'm done. Ah, memories.

100th anniversary of the Grey Cup in the town whose team made it the national celebration it is today isn't a horrible choice. Now, give Edmonton 2012, so we can have the actual 100th Grey Cup, and all will be right.

I've been to two GC's outside of my home town... 1987 in BC Place, and 1993 in Calgary.

Based on what happened, anybody wanna cough up a plane ticket to Calgary in 2009?

I'll probably be going myself, although, probably driving like in '75 and '93.

Let's see, I've been to the GC in '75 (Calgary), '91 (Winnipeg), '93 (Calgary), '97 (Edmonton), 2002 (Edmonton) and will be in 2008 (Montreal).

Great to see the game back in the west and a win be the esks again in Cowtown would be the icing. Then give Edmonton the 100th GreyCup game and everything is right.
