CFL in Ottawa on track for the 2014 season

OTTAWA -- The Canadian Football League is now on course to proudly add a ninth team in the nation's capital in time for the 2014 season, Commissioner Mark Cohon announced today.

"Today's positive City of Ottawa council vote means a beautiful new stadium and as early as 2014, a proud new franchise that will make its community proud and our league even stronger," Cohon said.

"This is a great day for our league and, for all of us who understand its' important place in the culture of Canada, a great day for our country."

By a vote of 21 to 3 this morning, Ottawa City Council decided to proceed with plans proposed by the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group to transform Frank Clair Stadium into a leading sports facility and surround it with an exciting new residential and retail complex.

"Our dream of a Canadian Football League franchise, which has always been the heart of this plan, is becoming a reality and we are absolutely thrilled and humbled," said Roger Greenberg of the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG).

"Now it's time to accelerate the important work of not only building a landmark destination that inspires and excites our city and region, but a business organization and football team that can and will compete for the Grey Cup."

OSEG includes Greenberg, Chairman and CEO of The Minto Group, John Ruddy, President of Trinity Development Group, Bill Shenkman, Chairman of the Shenkman Group of Companies, John Pugh, CEO and Owner of the Ottawa Fury Soccer Club, and Jeff Hunt, Owner and Governor of the Ottawa 67s, a leading member of the OHL.

Now that the stadium proposal has passed every legal and political test with flying colours, the process is underway to make Ottawa a full partner in the CFL.

As long as stadium construction remains on schedule, Ottawa will be eligible to select four underclassmen from the NCAA, commonly known as redshirts, in the 2013 CFL Canadian Draft. The Ottawa Expansion Draft will be in December, 2013.

Ottawa is also scheduled to be eligible to have a representative join the CFL Board of Governors as a full voting member in January, 2014, and to fully participate in the CFL Canadian Draft in Spring, 2014.

"The Board of Governors and I fully appreciate what this means to our fans in Ottawa and across the country and we share their excitement," Cohon said.

"We have pursued expansion to Ottawa in a prudent and businesslike manner, determined to ensure we had the right owners and the proper conditions in place for success in the nation's capital, which will ultimately make all of our teams stronger. I am confident that, with today's news, we are achieving our goals."

"Next time, take a case of Pil into the huddle. If you don't get a beer, get the hell off the field!" -New special teams coach for the Riders

"When the Eskimos are out on defense it looks like there are two or three number 47s out there." -Duane Ford

"...I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, I enjoy the banter though ..." -Looner

    Do it right this time!
No more drafting dead guys or Gliberman's or Horny Chen's running the team and everything should go smoothly.
The new group seems to have their stuff together so let's get it done properly.

And, let's hope to God the stadium is done on time, unlike Winnipeg...sheesh!

The only bad thing about that is with 9 teams the schedule gets kinda funky sometimes like teams having a bye week in their first week, etc.

It'll be interesting... their current schedule says the stadium should be ready June 2014, so it would be tight as that's just over a year and a half. Granted they don't need to build an entirely new stadium, but Winnipeg broke ground on theirs in May 2010, and two and half years later it's still not done.

Fortunately the Womens World Cup isn't until 2015, so it should be done for then... and if it falls behind, there will be more political stroke behind getting it done than the CFL can muster on its own.
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

With the short pre-season and the way teams typically play that first month, that may actually be an advantage

We need to get Winnipeg back to the west and a Quebec City or Moncton Franchise.

People have been saying that for decades... what the CFL "needs" to do is get Ottawa stable and established before worrying about putting the cart before the horse.

The Women's U 20 World Cup is scheduled for 2014 in Canada with the idea being that it be looked at as a test run for 2015 so most of the games should be scheduled for the same stadiums hosting the 2015 event. This puts additional pressure on Ottawa to get it done earlier...so hopefully they do not have construction delays.

I don't think the U-20 tourney is holding their breath on that one at this point. Rumblings were a couple weeks ago they were already making alternative plans to run the tourney without Ottawa hosting.

And now they'll be able to talk about the One Division League again because of the logistics of having mis-matched divisions...Personally I like the idea of it. Makes it more competitive and the crossover essentially is a way of them saying the one division sucks anyways...
I honestly can't remember, but has an Eastern team ever crossed over into a Western playoff spot?

                      Nope, never happened.

Really good to see Ottawa returning. I've missed them.
Out of my mind; back in five minutes.

I personally like the east/west setup. It's just a part of the tradition for me. If I got a vote I'd leave it as is.

And bring back the Rough Riders.

See, I know there's a difference and again it's tradition and all...but I never liked the Rough Riders name...prefered the Renegades myself.

Hopefully we don't protect Steven Jyles and Ottawa is tricked into taking him in the expansion draft. That'll be nice to see.
But he's a Tillman guy so knowing our GM we'll protect Joseph, Jyles and Masoli and let Nicholls go.
