    Cheatwood Signed

    September 18, 2007

Eskimos sign DE Cheatwood and rookie RB Anderson

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos announced today the signings of CFL veteran import defensive end Tim Cheatwood and import running back Damien Anderson.

Cheatwood signed as a free agent with the Tiger-Cats in 2002. He played for Hamilton for five seasons at defensive end, appearing in 77 regular season games and registering 224 defensive tackles and 41 quarterback sacks. He was named an East Division All-Star in 2003 and 2004 and was Hamilton’s nominee for the CFL Most Outstanding Player Award in 2003. Cheatwood signed with the Montreal Alouettes in 2007 and spent the first half of the season on the 9-game injured list with a knee injury before being released.

Anderson was a stand-out running back at Northwestern, leaving as the sixth all-time leading rusher in Big Ten history (4,485 yards) and NU’s all-time leader in rushing, all-purpose yards (5,261), rushing TDs (38) and 200-yard games (4). He had a break-out junior year in 2000 when he rushed for a school-record 2,063 yards, and set Northwestern single-season marks with 171.9 yards per game, 2,195 all-purpose yards, 23 touchdowns and 138 points scored. That year he was ranked second in the nation in rushing yards per game, was a first-team All-American and finished fifth in Heisman voting. His senior year was cut short when he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. Anderson signed as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in April 2002. He played 35 games over four seasons with the Cardinals.

hmmm... I've always like Cheatwood, but I gotta wonder what an injured 13 yr vet will be able to bring.

If he's got enough gas to assist with the D-Line rotation to close out the year, fine. But I don't see the move as much more than that.

oooohhh. I kind of like the Cheatwood signing. He was a hell of a player in Hamilton.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

I follow NCAA closely so the signing of Anderson is very interesting to me. He was a good college player. Hopefully his style of play suits the CFL better than it suited the NFL.

Bringing in a proven CFL sackmaster like Cheatwood is something I see as a positive thing. Hopefully he still has some sacks left in him for us.

IF it has, and IF he's in game shape (considering he's coming off the 9 game list) then he could contribute... still iffy.

                    Hmmmm.

If Cheatwood is a depth/rotation move, sounds good. Hopefully we aren't paying him much at all.

As for the RB...while I don't know anything about the guy, I thought four RB's in the organization was enough. Guess not.

                      Er.. 13 year vet?? He's 29! That's quite a prodigy!

I'm in wait-and-see mode on this one. If he can return to form, that's fantastic and should free up a bit of doubling on Braidwood so we can do some damage. If not, I'd imagine with less than half the season left, we didn't push the salary cap TOO far..

The best we can hope for is a Montford type situation, which was good but not great.

Joe also filled a mentor and leadership role. Not sure if Tim brings that with him too.

I'm curious as to whether or not Cheatwood still has any of his old form left in him. He was once dominant, but I fear the injuries have taken their toll.

I am intrigued by this Anderson kid though, there are certainly some credentials that raise eyebrows and one might wonder or speculate that perhaps this s the death knell for Goldie. Also interesting to note the location that this guy came from, not exactly in PJ's southeast wheelhouse.

I've never heard that innuendo before and I don't wanna know what it means.
