Who Will it Be? Won't Be Trey Young

    Two deals await signatures
    By JONATHAN HUNTINGTON, SUN MEDIA

If everything goes as planned, two new faces are going to be joining the Edmonton Eskimos very soon.

The club has verbally agreed to deals with two players to join the practice roster.

By leaving two vacant spots on the practice roster - which was announced yesterday - Edmonton head coach Danny Maciocia gave himself the wiggle room to bring in the bodies.

These players aren't recent castoffs from other CFL teams, according to Maciocia.

That means three-year CFL defensive back/linebacker Trey Young - who was cut by the Calgary Stampeders on the weekend - isn't coming north.

The Eskimos are very thin at defensive tackle, meaning one of the players will likely address a depth need.

Right now, Jim Davis and Dario Romero are the only players on the depth chart that can play the two tackle positions.

With Adam Braidwood on the nine-game injured list and Michael-Jean Louis cut, there are holes to fill.

Of course, the verbal deals on the two new players could fall through as any CFL team could get into a bidding war.

The two will be announced if and when contracts are signed.

As for the five confirmed names on the Esks practice roster, they are all recent cuts from Edmonton's training camp: DB Jonathan Hood, WR Dante Luciani, DB Bradley Robinson, OL Adam Rogers and K/P Derek Schiavone.

Robinson is the only import on the list, meaning the two new players coming to town can both be imports.

By not placing a running back on the PR list, the Esks don't have an import in town to substitute for Damien Anderson if he gets hurt.

"If (Anderson) is hurt, there are a few things we can do. We can always call (AJ) Harris back, first," said Maciocia.

"Secondly, we think Calvin McCarty can play some tailback for us."

McCarty is a non-import special teams veteran.

    QUICK HITS

Kicker Warren Kean remains unemployed after being cut by the Eskimos on Saturday.

Agent Darren Gill indicates there might not be any serious interest from other CFL teams until after Week 1 of the regular season.

    JOURNEY CONTINUES

Hood and Luciani continue their life journey together by being named to the Esks' practice roster yesterday.

They have known each other since elementary school in Oakville, Ont.

    FINISH LINES

Besides Fred Perry, the Esks don't have a lot of veteran experience at defensive end. But Maciocia isn't talking to Terrance Patrick, who was cut this weekend in Calgary. Patrick had 11 combined sacks in 2006 and 2007.

Hopefully Harris is one of the PR signings.

I get the sense that DM thinks that Harris will be available even if we don't put him on the PR. Not sure whether that's true.
Out of my mind; back in five minutes.

Man......I wish we were told of a good reason NOT to sign Trey Young.

Besides price, of course...if he wants too much, then that's fine.

But we need another guy or two at his position(s), he's a vet, he's experienced, he's a good player, and I also have him in the fantasy draft .

Sign him, PLEASE. Or at least SOMEBODY sign him, even if it's not us.

If not Trey Young...how about Scott Coe? Terrance Patrick? Charles Alston?

Personally I'd be happy with Alston back and AJ Harris on the PR.

Alston is better than what have right now, that being air. Alston was a frusterating player because he actually got into the backfield alot but he constantly missed tackles once he was there.

I cannot figure out what happened to Alston?? He contributed significantly on defense when we won the cup in '05, then all of a sudden...poof!...gone!

To me it was never about what I accomplished on the football field, it was about the way I played the game.

I think the correct medical term is Tony Tompkins Disease. It is a disease that causes once productive football players to somehow forget all the fundamentals and forget how to play the game.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.
