Trade Nichols for a solid RB?

We have a franchise QB in Reilly and Crompton looks like a promising backup. Our receiving corp is quickly becoming one of the best in the CFL, and we are starting to solidify our line. It seems the only weak spot on offense that we have is at the RB position. Reilly has proven durable even with a Swiss cheese line. He stayed healthy even after taking all those huge hits, which I don't anticipate him taking this season. He has never missed a game to injury so it isn't likely our backup will even see much playing time. Why don't we shop Nichols around for a top notch running back? There are plenty of teams that would love to get their hands on Nichols and I don't see us making it very far without a back that can average more rushing yards per game than our QB for God's sake. What do you all think?

    Who, exactly?

Every team appears set at QB and Nichols is unproven.

Agreed, though those appearances may be deceiving. Do they really have anything proven in Winnipeg or Montreal?

That said, you're right that in the same light, Nichols is not proven either.

I'd also argue that RB is our weak spot. I have no idea what our backs can do behind a line that can run block for them. It's still our OL that needs constant improvement. The problem is a shortage of NI tackles these days.

Good point. We could always trade him for a decent draft pick and try to get a RB like Coombs out of the draft?

Is there a RB in the league that you believe is worth trading for? The best one at the moment would be Sheets IMO, but he's a FA. That being said, import RB should not be an overly difficult position to address on our own without having to turn to other teams. I don't mind going to camp with White and Charles but I would absolutely like to see some bigger bodies brought in to compete.

I Wouldn't trade him for a RB, an NI Olineman maybe, but not a RB.

I really don't think you can get anything for Nichols. If Ottawa could get something for Glenn, don't you think they would? If Glenn's value is low, then Nichols is non-existent IMO.

You wait. You hope Nichols shows well in TC then when Willy doesn't work out in Winnipeg or Burris is out for the season with a sprained vagina, then maybe you try and work out a deal.

For now, there's nothing you can do.

Wise words. Let's say that Nichols kills it in pre-season and gets some interest. Who can you see us getting off of Winnipeg for him? It seems like the league is pretty stacked on young QB talent. Its too bad he got injured and we couldn't have traded him to Winnipeg in season last year. His stock seemed decently high then.

You gotta remember that White is one year removed from college. 1 year pro CFL is the equivalent of 2 seasons in college. He'll have the benefit of understanding the game better, getting in better CFL shape, and understanding what to improve on for this year. I'm content to be patient with him, or if not him, another fresh face. Used RB's are like buying a used car out of ontario; there's a reason why they're for sale

Re: Trade Nichols for a solid RB?

The CFL is too small to really be able to make good trades like that. Unless you have someone over a barrel (or one GM is a moron, and we've had more than our share in recent history), the going rate for almost any one is a draft pick if you can get a suitor... either that or your trading damaged good for damaged goods.

And running backs just seem like a crap shoot at the best of times. I think you're better just picking guys up and throwing them against the wall to see who sticks. The disparity is often jarring not just from one team to the next, but even one season to the next with the same team... case in point, Cory Boyd, he was coming off an all-star season, leading the current season in yardage, and still ended up getting released by the Argos. And even after we picked him up, he was released a couple months later here too, and never seen again.
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

That is true as well. I wonder how much cap space he takes up and what Nichols current contract is. I would be fine with going south for a RB as well. We just really need a threat that can keep opposing LB honest and not blitz the house on Reilly with no threat of getting burned on a draw, etc. Is there anyone else on our roster we could transform into a solid runningback?

Re: Trade Nichols for a solid RB?

Because of Nichols injury history and the fact that he is still relatively unproven, I'm not sure he has much value right now. I would not be in a rush to move him, as while he might have lost the shot at a starting job due to injury and Reilly stepping up last year, injuries can happen to anyone at anytime and it's always good to have depth at the most important position on the team. I haven't seen enough of Crompton to be comfortable handing the reigns over to him just yet in the hopefully unlikely event that Reilly goes down, whereas I am comfortable that Nichols could do a more than adequate job in that role.

If it gets to the point where it becomes obvious to everyone that he is ready to be a starter in this league, then you make a decision between him and Reilly at that time and make a move when there is value coming back.

Give Will Ford a shot. You don't have to trade MN.
