Week 12 - The Landscape is Changing

So after the LDC series we all know what most of us thought we knew, and that we're not quite ready for prime time. But that's ok. 3 years ago we weren't even ready for overnight.

Lots of change in the landscape of the west as of today. Lulay, done. Durrant, done. And while we endured a raft of early season injuries, we're now starting to get healthier, even through or record setbacks.

Every team experiences ups and downs in a season, and the trick is to get it all sorted out and on the upswing as you get into Oct and towards the playoffs. If this is our mid season stumble, then I'd rather it happen now with opportunities to get it squared away with games left to start building momentum.

The defense has to get stuff shored up as the LDC series exposed some weaknesses that other teams will try to exploit, namely the wheaties with their run game. The offense has to get healthy and frankly needs a piece or two to find a spark. Besides AB our WR core has no fireplug. Stamps may or may not return to the Stamps of old, but I can safely bet that EH/CJ are not holding their breath hoping that it happens. They're on the hunt. The problem lies in a lot of players not wanting to give up on their NFL dream having just been released and the glitter of early season NFL injuries providing opportunities while they may be fresh in NFL coaches/player personel minds.

I'm less concerned about the returner side of the return game than I am with the lack of cohesion and holes being opened by the foot soldiers. Fix that issue and the production will come

The Als come in on their season best win streak, and we have to make sure that comes to a sudden and thudding halt. I expect the Als to be loose and energetic, while we might be snarly and just maybe a little on the tight side after back to back losses. Simply put we need to find our stride and our swagger again and the only way to do so is to get back to basics and outwork and out play the Als.

This is a big game, regardless of the records.
I will not, for a moment longer, support an organization who chooses to cowardly kneel where they once fiercely & proudly stood

    Extremely well said Diesel.

Stop the losing streak now. Get the Als started on another one. Score early, and often. Crompton takes his time in the pocket, and it's something the D line can exploit and hit hard. 13 looks like he's on the mend, and if all goes well today, we should see him Friday night.

        Completely agree Diesel,

There can be no slow start by the Esks on Friday and no giving the Als a chance to hang around and pull out an upset. We need to run the ball effectively and mercilessly and grind them/the clock the whole game.
If we are pi$$ed off like we ought to be then we had better lay 40+ points on these guys and thump them to the whistle on every play!

Montreal is susceptible to the run, we need it to be a bigger part of our playbook in general, but especially starting this week.

I would expect the defense should be fired up. I think the 2 games vs Calgary flattered the Esks a little. On paper the game on Saturday was close but for over 50 mins, it wasn't. Crompton was with the Esks for 2 seasons, they should know exactly what he can and can't do so he shouldn't surprise them. The Esks need to come out and lay a beat down on the Als.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

Re: Week 12 - The Landscape is Changing

with all the post game discussion focusing on Pat Watkins' unfortunate use of words, there was very little discussion of what happened in the game.

As unhappy as I was with the offence, I was more unhappy with the defence. We all know an elite defence can win championships. This defence has looked as good as any I have ever seen. What went wrong last weekend? I thought they played ok in Calgary but strangely played very poorly on at least 3 drives. For one, Samuels got beat, plain and simple, by McDaniels at least twice for big gains. But what has happened to the run defence? Cornish simply is not that good. The Oline in Calgary has 3 Canadians on the interior that were drafted in the second round, the sixth round, and signed from the Calgary Colts junior team as an undrafted free agent, all 3 with less than 2 years experience. how can those 3 players dominate a Dline that was dominating every other line in the league?

explanations are very welcome, I just don't understand it.

I totally agree Diesel. One thing I might add is that the refs need to call an unbiased game. We can't be getting the brunt of the penalties when there are just as many committed by the other team which don't get called.

Uh, Cornish IS that good & has proven it time & again against us over the years!

Re: Week 12 - The Landscape is Changing

i don't believe any running backs are that good...its 90% scheme and blocking. Good RB's are a dime a dozen.
Calgary ran for 110 yards against us on July 24 without Cornhole.

Arkee Whitlock and Hugh Charles say hello.

Our run defence last year gave up 200 yard games to Montreal and BC , not just Calgary. The gaps were a big problem, all part of Greg Marshall's defence the league figured out 7 years ago and he didn't adapt. This year, nobody was run for more than 100 yards against us....even when Cornish was injured. I believe on Saturday he only had the same amount of yards as the Stamps did in July without him...Dickenson runs a hell of a scheme and I don't understand how they can get the results from 3 sophomore CFL players that they are getting, thus the question.

I'm really looking forward to this game as an Als fan to see where my team is at. The last two games don't say much considering the opponents played at home and its hard to use the prior matchup as a gauge. For the Als to make a game of it, they have to solve Edmonton's running game before half time.
